Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Daphne Lyon
« on: Thursday 10 May 12 08:52 BST (UK)  »
I now have her marriage certificate.
She was living in Heaton Norris.
Her father was James Lyon, chemical manufacturer, deceased.
One of the witesses was Catharine M Lyon (nee Power I have determined) (M=probably Margaret but sometimes written as Mary.) She was the wife of William Lyon, a manufacturing chemist b. 1833.
(The other witness was Charles Halliwell who, according to the 1891 census, was a boarder living with Catherine in Preston. He was a cotton mill manager. William was dead by then.)

I have determined that brothers Job Henry Lyon and William Lyon ran an alkali works in Runcorn and a bottle factory in St. Helens under the name Lyon Brothers. They split their interests and Job ran the bottle business (Peasley Glass Works) and William ran the alkali works under the name Lyon and Sons at Old Quay Alkali Works. Both businesses eventually went bankrupt.
James must be tied up with them as it was Catherine who rocked up to the wedding. I thought he might have been a son of William but the ages don't work out.
So I still don't know where James fits in.

William and Job's father was Elias Lyon and mother Maria Gatley.

I have a number of parish records for Standish going back to 1624. Up to 1700 they are very difficult to read. However, I'll give it a go.

Send a pm for details. I have transcribed many of the fiche.

I have found out that J H Noon, Mrs Noon and son sailed to Adelaide from London 24 Jan 1896, 2 days after their wedding, on the SS Austral. He was described as being aged 32, she aged 29 and the son aged 6 (from his previous marriage.) The ages are at varience to what I have previouly understood to be correct.

By the way, have you found the immigration record of John Henry and Daphne?
No, but I have a local knowledgable friend who might help me with that. Worth pursuing.
Thanks for your interest.

There is a rumour, that the early family promulgated, that she was connected to the Bowes-Lyons, the family of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Of course, we are somewhat suspicious of that claim which might be somewhat ambitious!
I ordered the marriage certificate today. The father's name of James came from the LDS entry of the marriage.
At 86 most of his past family are no longer around.

I might have confused you. She died in SA in 1927 but I don't have any certificates. I'm doing this work for an 86 year old friend so I need to talk to him about how far he wants to go.

Do you have her death certificate? Is she the one who died in SA 1927?

Yes.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I suspect she had a first name she didn't like. Doesn't make it easy but I appreciate your work guys.
