Family History Beginners Board / Re: Reid, Hall, Moir from Aberdeenshire

Monica, thanks very much for this. Yes it might explain better how contact with the Reids was effectively lost so easily. My mother knew absolutely nothing about her mothers side even although her Reid grandparents would only have been in their mid 50's.
Mother had in her posession two silver broaches with Annie on ond and Ruth on the other so we assume Ruth died young as well.
Maybe my next step is to find the death of great grand parents Alexander & Annie, also Mary & Ruth.

Hi Patvp, brilliant, I had not twigged that Annie Reid was illigitimate but you are of course correct. I had a very rushed day in the Aberdeen registrar some years ago and found Ruth born 19 Aug 1889 and Mary 12 Jun 1891.
My mother had posession of two silver broaches with Annie (presumably her mother) and Ruth so we are assuming Ruth died before Annie and was not married but I never found a death record for either.
How do I get it on the Aberdeen board?
thanks very much - Sam

Hi -  Betsy Pottinger was married to William Harcus from Swartmill who died age 41, they had three of a family but when Betsy died at Smitaldy age 63 her parents were registered as James Pottinger and Christina Drummond. We must be looking at a different James Pottinger?

My Maternal grandmother was Annie Hall (1887 1917), born in Cairnhill, Montquhitter, Aberdeenshire and married John Hall in Turriff in 1907. Annie died when my mother was a few months old and all contact with the Reids were lost. I have some bones of a familytree for example I know she had two sisters Ruth & Mary and her father, grandfather and greatgrandfather were Alexander Reids.
Any information would be great but in particular I would really like a photo. I thought I had found one the other day when I got a photo of Johns neice Janet Moir's wedding but it turned out to be the new Mrs Hall.

I have note of the descendants of the family, there are still Pottingers on Westray. I have parents for William as William Pottinger & Christian Davidson which would follow in family names down the generations.

Hi, I am descended from Rieds as well but have no real information to go on, we are probably not connected but here goes.
My Grandmother was Annie Reid 1887-1917 and was married to John Hall in Auchterless, Annie was one of three sisters that we know nothing of as John Hall remarried. Annie's father, grandfather and great grandfather was Alexander.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
