Clare / Re: McNamara - Co. Clare
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 22:37 GMT (UK)  »
The furthest I have back is Patrick McNamara 1 b abt 1795 who married Bridget Quinlan
He came from the townland of Cloonnagro, a townland of 290 acres in Co Clare, Barony Tulla Upper, Civil Parish Feakle, Poor Law Union Tulla, Province Munster.
I've done the Griffiths etc but there's no Macs in Cloonnagro, but there are 3 Rogers (including John, maybe the father of Patrick 2's wife Eleanor)
Patrick 2 b 1820 in Cloonnagro and married Eleanor Rogers (b 1825 Cloonnagro) in 1848 at Cloonnagro.
They emigrated in 1850 and Patrick was employed by Dr James Murray at Woden and was described as a leaseholder in the 1856 electoral roll.
On 12 Sep 1861 he selected 33 acres at 'Katy Flat', Burra at a Crown Land sale in Queanbeyan and it was there that most of his family were born. His occupation was a farmer.
He died after a 3 year illness with 'rheumatic affection' on 19 Feb 1870 in Queanbeyan. Death Certificate states father Patrick McNamara, farmer and mother Bridget Quinlan.
So I'm sure they were never in SA though the connection is interesting with ashenique's Rogers/McNamara info.

Montgomeryshire / Morris family
« on: Wednesday 07 November 07 05:32 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x gt grandfather Price/Pryce Morris was supposed to have been born in Llanfair Caereinion, Montgomeryshire about 1780-83. At age 29 he was given a life sentence on 7 Apr 1810 at the Montgomery Assizes for sheep stealing. He was transported aboard the Guildford, leaving London in Aug 1811 and arriving in Australia on 21 Jan 1812. I have quite a bit of information about the family out here - including the restoration of the cottage he built in 1837 at St Albans, but I have recently heard that he was married and had a family in Wales. Can anyone confirm his birth/bap details please and find out the correct nature of his conviction and marital status? I'm happy to help with any info re musters, permission to marry etc on the Aussie side. Thanks in advance for any help, Regards, Robbie

Clare / Re: O'Loughlin 1829 birth LOOK UP
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 22:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Steve,
Just read your message and was wondering if you'd had any replies. I don't know if this can give you any direction, but I've been searching for McNamaras in Co. Clare (yes, I have found one or two of them ;=D).
I have a John McNamara from Cloonagro (also known as Clongurrah, Clonlara, or Clonglarrah), Parish of Feakle, Union Tulla, Co. Clare. In 1945 he married Margaret Walsh/Welsh who was born about 1824 in the same place.
I'm wondering if she may be a cousin of the one you are looking for as her parents were Michael Walsh/Welsh and Mary O'Loughlin. Your 1829 birth could have been a niece or nephew of Mary's since the birth date is close to Margaret's.
Also, don't know if this would help in your travels:
O'Loughlin is derived from the native Gaelic Sept O'Lochlainn that was based in Counties Clare and Limerick. Loughnane is a variant.
So you may find some under the latter name.
BTW 'ours' emigrated to Aust in 1850. I wonder if one of Margaret's siblings also came out?
Happy hunting,
Robbie

Clare / Re: Walsh and Maloney to Australia
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
Don't know if this helps, but I have a John McNamara b 1822 Cloonagro, Feakle, Tulla, Co. Clare whose wife was Margaret Walsh/Welsh b abt 1824, Feakle, Co. Clare.
John McNamara (27) and wife Margaret (Welsh/Walsh) (26) and family- Patrick (3) and John (1)  travelled to Port Philip, Australia from Co. Clare, Ireland arriving on 26 June 1850 on the Bussorah Merchant (Reel No 2145).
MCNAMARA   John, Margaret and family 1850
Ship: Bussorah Merchant   Reel No. 2145   Item: 4/4817, p.131
They settled in London Bridge, Burra, Queanbeyan and John's obituary states that he was 'almost first to settle in the district known as Burra, and its development owes a great deal to his foresight and pluck in the years gone by."
Margaret's parents were Michael Walsh/Welsh and Mary O'Loughlin, also of Co.Clare.
From memory I'm sure there was another Walsh on the same ship but it wasn't Margaret's brother as I first thought it could have been.
I got the shipping information off a Victorian Shipping website by chance so you may like to check there as well.
Happy hunting,
Robyn

Clare / McNamara - Co. Clare
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
G'day from Oz
He-e-e-lp!! I'm searching for the birthplace of g-g-grandfather Patrick McNamara b 1820 in Clare. He married Ellen Rogers b. 1825 some time before the birth of their son Michael John in 1849.
In June 1850 Patrick and family with (prob brother) John and family Margaret, Patrick and John emigrated to NSW Australia onboard the 'Bussorah Merchant'. I don't know from which port they departed.
There are so many Patrick and Michael McNamaras in Clare that I have no idea of which town they may have come from.
Would anyone please be able to start me off in Ireland?
Bye for now, Gary n Rob
