Many thanks for all the informative and helpful responses. To answer Carol's question re the 1841 census, yes I did calculate the 1827 year of birth from the age of 14 given here. Thanks for the info on rounding down, but even if they did, she would still have made her almost 15.
Good spot re the initials of the rector, but still begs the question why he added them. Thanks also for the comments on the witnesses, I never knew that this occurred, believe the second person was John Duncan, perhaps if I find him on the census it will give his occupation as "Professional Witness" (joke). Unless I get a copy of the baptism, I will probably not get the the bottom of this, however it's this sort of thing that makes family history so interesting - and at times so challenging.
One thing to add is that John Redfern was a widow at the time of the marriage. His first wife (Mary Ann Aley) I believe died in between Apr-Jun of 1946 - got this from Free BMD, certificate to be obtained. He then married Maria in October. So not too much of a courtship!
