I will be spending the day at my local SP centre late next week and would like to offer to look up and transcribe a few records for fellow members.

Thanks Don,

I've downloaded the 1859 marriage from SP and although Jane's father isn't recorded as deceased both parents' names fit so it seems to be her. I'll have a look at the 1861 James Bowman birth and look for other children as well. Now I have a married name to search for in the 1861 Census. I'd been stuck with Jean Hill for a very long time but thanks to Rootschatters I'm finally making progress.

Scotland / Jean Hill disappears after 1855
« on: Monday 18 September 17 12:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with my 4 x great aunt, Jean Hill. Jean was born about 1835 in Ayrshire (probably in Galston) to Thomas Hill (1797-1855) and Mary Cuthill (c.1808-1890). She appears, aged 6, in the 1841 Census with her family at Orchard Street, Galston. The death record for her father Thomas in 1855 lists his issue and Jean is listed, age 18. I think I have also found her on the 1851 Census as Jane Hill, age 15, a house servant at Cessnock House, Galston. This gives Galston as her place of birth. I can't find any trace of her after 1855. I've searched marriages, deaths and Census records allowing for name variations. She could have married before statutory registration began in 1855 making it difficult for me to find her on the 1861 Census. A sister, Mary Anne, married a John Simpson in 1862 and emigrated to Indiana, USA around 1872. Jean could have emigrated as well.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with name on Census, please

Thanks Isobel. I feel confident it's Andrew now. Andrew fits better than Luis or Vino (I know some Ancestry transcriptions can be way off) as there's an 8 year old Andrew living with the couple in the 1841 Census. As to why he was with his grandparents in 1841 and 1851 when his parents were both still living, that's another mystery.

Thanks again, Gadget. Here's the word 'Lodger' from the page with the 'L' looking very similar to the 'L' in 'Labourer'. Maybe the transcribers at Freecen are right and it's Andrew after all.
