My father's family came from what are affectionately known as "The Wallops".  Name of Chant.

England / Sarah Elizabeth Winifred GILL - Bristol
« on: Saturday 04 February 06 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the final resting place for Sarah Elizabeth Winifred GILL.  Maiden name was HODDER.

She died in 1st quarter of 1968 in Bristol.

Born Portishead 1890.  Lived in Clevedon, Somerset for most of her life.

Sarah was married to John GILL who died on the Titanic.

A friend is hoping to find a grave to visit.  So any info relating to her burial or maybe cremation would be helpful.

Could some kind soul please look her up on any Bristol/Avon parish burial records they may have, or give me any pointers as to where to look next.

thanks

Thanks again Heather!

Knowing that Grandma was a Shayler has opened up a whole new line of enquiry!

I shall re-check the GRO next time I go to Winchester - not sure how/why I missed Mum's entry.

Cheers

Thank you very much.

I am now more confident about the Fly connection.

I shall pursue this a little further.

Thanks again.

Thanks everyone for your kind help and advice.

Particular Heather B!

This sounds like my Mum: Mary Margaret Floy.  She was born Aug 1925 in Bournemouth, so reg date is right.

Also sounds like Grandma.  She was born Aug 1901.  I thought she was Florence Maud, but Mum could easily have not known/forgotten that it is Florence Sarah Maud!  And the Shayler/Dale scenario a possibility.

May I ask where you found this info please?  I couldn't find Mum on the GRO index at Hants RO!

Thank you VERY much!

The Common Room / Catholic Records

I wonder if someone can advise me please.

I am unable to find a birth record for my maternal grandmother, Florence Maud DALE.  She was born in either Aug 1901, or Aug 1902, and of course will not appear on the 1901 census.  I am told that she was born in Portsmouth, but this may be incorrect.

I was hoping that finding the record of birth for her daughter, my mother, Mary Margaret FLOY b. 18 July 1925, may give some clues about Florence, but I cannot find this either.  Nor can I find a marriage record of Florence marrying John Henry FLOY.

My grandparents and mother (still alive) were catholic, and I understand that their details may be recorded elsewhere.  However, I cannot find them on IGI.

I am prepared to look through every Portsmouth parish record if I have to, but is there somewhere else I can obtain this information?

Just to say that there are a few Florence Maud DALEs on IGI, but not in Hampshire nor anywhere near it!

I would be grateful for any pointers.

Thanks in anticipation.

Derbyshire / Look Up FLOY
« on: Sunday 27 February 05 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can someone help with this please?

I am looking for the parents of my g-g grandfather, James Floy, born Abt 1837 in Buglawton, Macclesfield, Cheshire.  He married Ellen Goodwin, born Abt 1844, in Abt 1865 (unconfirmed).

I have him on the 1871 census, but another contact couldn't find him on the 1861 or 1851 census for Cheshire, UK.   He believed that James and his family may have been in Derbyshire during this period, but I haven't found them yet.

He did find a record on 1841 for a John FLY (not FLOY), b. 1816, married to Catherine born Ireland, other details unknown.  He thought this was James's father because he had a son called James b. 1835 in Buglawton.

I have to say that I am not convinced that John FLY is James's father.  The dates for the whole family between 1841 and 1871 do not match.

I would be grateful for you help.

Thanks in anticipation.
