Thanks, Jim - it's interesting that not much seemed to be there at the time. Narrows it down a bit, I guess. I had just assumed it was a street full of more up-market private residences.

Hi
Does anyone know what was at 'St Valery', Slade Road, Roughley (Birmingham)?
The person I'm looking into was a domestic servant there in 1928. I'm thinking maybe it was just the name of a private residence, but I thought I'd ask just in case anyone has heard of it as being something else.

Thanks

Thanks Ms Clark, I' d love to see a photo of the old place if you have one. I'll reply to the message you sent via my 'Whitings' site. Cheers for having a root around too, Chris. I reckon your probably right about the stones being removed - often what happens even in existing churchyards.

Great, thanks Rosie. That's interesting - living smack bang in the middle of Cambridge.. I had him down as more of the Ag Lab type, or thought maybe he was a soldier at that time or something. Do you have a date with that?

Hi Rosie, thanks for those suggestions.

I really just wanted a 'Look up', if anyone has access to transcripts of the registers of St Andrew the Less (e.g from a CFHS CD). If there are no other details in the entry, even the actual date would be just fine.

The reason I'm interested is Martha Argent was a distant relative, ended up marrying a Whiting who I'm connected to. Her first marriage, though, was to Stephen Backler, who was a bit of a character and had a few spells in gaol. They seem to have travelled around a lot after marriage, although they were both living in the Haverhill area before they met as far as I know so I wanted to find out more about why they married in Cambridge.

I have a page for Martha on my site: https://sites.google.com/site/haverhillwhitings/individuals-1/martha-argent-1813

Thanks

Simon

Hi

Does anyone have details of the marriage of
Stephen Backler to Martha Argent at St Andrew the Less Church, Cambridge
4th Quarter 1843?

I'd particularly like to know the occupation of the Groom, and if the couple were listed as 'OTP'?

many thanks

Simon H

Hi
this is quite a puzzle considering how good the pic is, how much you know about him, and how distinctive his name is.
The picture shows him with spurs and riding crop, so some involvement with horses..
The Army Veterinary Corps entry from the medal rolls has been investigated by Jim and discounted, the badge doesn't look like a Royal Horse Artillery badge - there are several other Joseph Haines on the medal rolls from this regiment.
..This is just an idea, but how about ordering the birth certificates of one/both of his daughters born during the later stages of the war. They may have his regiment under 'fathers occupation'.

..my apologies Jim, wrote this reply as if it were to the original post - got confused looking between posts and forgot you'd posted this one.
