Thank you for responding.  I had already come across the fact that Cleveland County only existed from the mid 1970's - 1990's.  I can only assume they used an existing name.  The burial record of 1758 definitely says Cleveland.

Maybe!  I will do some research on Meynell Hall and see where it leads.  I am still confused though with all the Kirby’s that keep cropping up - Yorkshire/Cleveland.  Another reference to it is my ancestor’s burial record 1758 which states he was “Mr Ralph Hill of “Menil Hall, Cleveland.”  Thank you for your reply.

I have an ancestor who was connected with Mennil Hall Kirby with Brompton in the 1700’s.  I have trawled the internet until my head is swimming to find out something about it – but to no avail.  I can find nothing.  Does anyone have any information or know anything about it.  I would be grateful for any help.

How very interesting - I never thought about the weaving of linen.  Thank you so much Skelp for your reply and for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you all for your replies.  Input and information is all very interesting.  I am grateful to Spelk for the information about the cottage industry and the loom sometimes being hired.  The direction my research needs to go is now much clearer.

I hope I am posting this on the correct board?    If not, could someone kindly direct me to the correct board please?
Does anyone know where I might find information about weavers/weaving in North Duffield in the  18th Century?  I have an ancestor who was a weaver there at that time.  There is plenty of information on the web but it tends to concentrate on the West Yorkshire area of Bradford, Halifax etc. – the industrial woollen mills.  I would be grateful for any help.  Many thanks.
