Armed Forces / James Bray - 2nd Btn Scottish Rifles
« on: Thursday 14 November 19 18:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am looking for some help regarding James Bray, he was my sister in law's great grand uncle.  We believe that he was killed in action somewhere between 1899 and 1902. He served in Jubbulpore East India, however we can find no trace of a death certificate or his name on a service return on Scotlands people.  This is what I have found out so far

James Bray born Paisley 15 Aug 1869
Signed up with the Argyll and Sunderland Highlanders 11 Feb 1886, he then moved to Scottish Rifles 2nd Btn on  01 Aug 1888. Sadly this doesn't give me his service number, only that he moved regiment

His daughter was born in Paisley in 1899, so we know that James was home at this time.  We can find no trace of him after this date.

Would anyone know if he died in India would his death be formally registered here in Scotland ? I know we have Service returns for the WW dead however I am not sure if this was in place before 1914 ?
I have checked websites CCWC and forces war records, however all of these have brought up a blank.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received

Thanks Normski

Hi Jo Rose,

I have double checked the marriage certificate.  No the witnesses were a Matthew McGuire and a Catherine Ward...Daniels mother's name was Sarah.  Worth a try though thanks

Hi Lisa,  Thanks for your reply.  I have found Daniel in all the Census from 1881 to 1911 in Cambuslang Glasgow.  It states that he was born in Glasgow Lanarkshire.  However the family story goes is that Daniel returned to Scotland after the US Civil war. Daniels grand daughter remembers that her grandfather had an American accent ! I have looked at the passenger listings going out to the US.  I have found a Michael McLaughlin departing the UK in 1822 but he travelled alone.  Stumped !  Thanks for all your help

Hey Guys...looking for some help please.  I am helping out a family friend who is trying to trace his 2 x great Grandfather  Daniel McLaughlan. The family story goes that he came from Virginia to Scotland where he met his future wife. They were married in Glasgow in 1877 however the immigration records to the UK start in 1878 ! We believe he was born around 1854/1855 to Michael McLaughlan and Sarah Heffernan.  At the time of his marriage in 1877 Daniels father was deceased however the mother Sarah was still living.  I have looked on Scotlands people but can find no death certificate for his mother. Michael is listed as being coalminer. We think that the family may originally came from Scotland immigrated to the USA although we have nothing to confirm this.. Any advice where we can go from here ?  Many thanks

Lanarkshire / Descendants of Thomas McGuire and Mary Rowan
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 15:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am trying to trace descendants of Thomas McGuire born 1903 in Paisley and Mary McGuire ( Rowan)  I have found they had a son Thomas John McGuire who was a Publican in Glasgow but died in 1983. I believe that the family  might be still living in the Glasgow area.

Any help would be great.

Thanks
