Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism - WILSON Carrington
« on: Wednesday 22 February 17 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently discovered that Francis Wilson and Mary (Carrington) of Tendring had a grandson, Carrington Wilson baptised 4 Oct 1785 at Tendring, son of their son, William (1740) and his wife Alice Simpson. He would be a good candidate for the mariner in Ipswich who was buried at Gt.Bromley in 1851, aged 66.

I have a much earlier Carrington Wilson in my family, baptised 1732 at Tendring, Essex (much closer to Kirby) and not far from Gt Bromley either. He was the son of Francis Wilson and Mary Carrington. He was an ancestor of the Barrymores (of Hollywood fame).

Thanks for the marriage. Being listed as Haggard explains why I didn't find it and why I wasn't happy with the James Hagger/Mary Ann Andrews registered much earlier in Saffron Walden, when they would barely have been of age to marry!

Jane b.c.1858 Theydon Bois m. Henry Price, Dec Qtr 1881 West Ham District (which includes Walthamstow) where they were living in 1891 Census.

Thanks too for the details of John and Harriet.

Thanks for posting the details, Amondg, and apologies for saying my daughter-in-law's ancestor, Jane was James and Sarah's daughter, she was actually their grand-daughter b.c.1858 Theydon Bois, daughter of James and Sarah's son, James and his wife, Mary Ann (?Andrews).

Interesting about William and Hannah, having children in the same period as James and Sarah, as a Hannah Hagger was a witness at James and Sarah's marriage.

Thank you too for your comment Chooch. Did John (1820) stay in the Epping area?

I enjoyed reading this conversation as James Hagger and Sarah Vincent were my daughter-in-law's direct ancestors, through their daughter, Jane.

Hi Melfordgal

I have just cracked the mystery, Francis (Frank) snell was bap. 21 Jan 1844 Long Melford to Sarah Snell. In 1851, aged 7 he was a visitor in the household of Elijah Otley and his hosekeeper, Susan Andrews, aged 54 (b.Lavenham). He was aged 17 and with the same people in 1861 Census, but described as grandson.

Looking at Ray Long's Cosford Database, there was a Susan Snell bap.23 Oct 1797 Lavenham who had a daughter, Sarah Snell, bap.2 July 1821 at Lavenham (which fits the age in 1851 and 1861 Censuses) Susan went on to marry James Andrews at Lavenham, 21 June 1824. Susan's parents were Thomas Snell and Margaret Church who were married in 1792 at Lavenham, and so far I haven't connected Thomas to my family of Snells.

So the Sarah bap.1816 is not your ancestor.

I found that Albert Clover's mother was a Harriet Raynham, who appears in my records, but we can't prove that Albert was Ruth's father, so Harriet may not be your actual ancestor.

This family is getting difficult to piece together. I have just found your Ruth Snell b.Norwich, aged 2 at Smaley Lane, Melford in 1871 Census with her mother, Mary,  aged 25. The head of the usehold is Frank Snell, aged 27 (Mary's brother!!).

In 1851 Mary Ann, aged 5 is with her mother, Sarah (but her age is given as only 30) and Sarah is with William Howe, aged 32 (b.Glemsford), listed as his housekeeper with Mary Ann, 5 and a son, Thomas, aged 3 months.

In 1861 Sarah is listed as wife (but age 40) with William Howe and three children, Mary A, aged 15, Thomas, 10 and William, 5 (all listed as Howe).

If it is the same Sarah she is listed as Snell, aged 54 (a more accurate age) with her widowed mother, Ann in High Street, Lavenham. Sarah Snell aged 65 was living with William and Elizabeth Turner in High Street, Lavenham. Sarah was buried 1887 at Lavenham.

Can we be sure that the Sarah who is clearly your ancestor, is the same one who is back at Lavenham in 1871 and 1881?
Why can't I find Frank Snell before 1871 Census?
