World War One / Middlesex Regiment pre WW1 and during WW!
« on: Monday 30 October 17 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
An ancestor of mine, 6406 Pte Henry Hillman was shown as a bandboy in the Middlesex Regiment at Woolwich in the 1901 census and a musician in the 4th Bn The Middlesex Regiment at the 1911 census, at Aldershot, where he is shown as single and aged 26. Henry was born at Bethnal Green in 1884, his parents were Henry William Hillman and Ann nee Kelly (born Ireland) and I have searched everywhere on line seeking his death, and looked to find a marriage for him, and searched for him in WW1 records, all with negative results, Is there anybody out there who can tell me where I may find any details about Henry after 1911 when he was at Aldershot with the 4th Bn. I tried to make contact with the Regimental association, (Queens Association)  but their little Captcha window kept taking me in circles, and I was not able to send them a message , just so frustrating, so if anybody can help me, please do so, it would be so much appreciated if I was able to fill this hole in my Hillman family history.

Essex Lookup Requests / Re: John Gowers in Stebbing
« on: Monday 30 October 17 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
John Gowers born Stebbing in abt 1816 was the 9th child of Thomas Gowers (born 1770 and his wife Sarah nee Willis, and John married at Stebbing in 1840 to Elizabeth Lapworth, is that the same john for whom you are searching? The father of Thomas Gowers was most likely Reginald Foote Gower or Gowers, but we have not been able to prove that. My g/g/grandma was Elizabeth (Eliza) Gowers, 5th child of Thomas and Sarah, so she was older sister of John born 1816. Eliza  married William Myall, and their son Samuel was the father of my grandma. I do not have any other John  Gowers on my Gowers file, but happy to share the info I have on the Gowers family if you wish. Best wishes from Lila in Australia

On my Gowers family history file I have a George Lewis born Stebbing 1846 who married to Hannah *aka Anna) Gowrs in 1868, and they had 2 children that I have found, they were Margaret and Ellen, so if this is the family you are interested in, pleaes let me know, but as said earlier I would need to send this info by email, so if there are private message facility on this site, then please send me a pm and I can take it from there, as I dont add details family history to public sites. I also have a Sarah Jane Gowers on my tree, born Stebbing 1858, baptised Stebbing 20th June 1858, she was 3rd daughter of Charles Gowers and his wife Elizabeth,  but not yet found other info about her, Best wishes from Australia

Thanks Jane. I am actually trying to follow the Lewis line from Stebbing. The Gowers (Sarah Jane) side is my great grandmother. If you can give me marriage information prior to George Lewis and Elizabeth Turpin that would be greatly appreciated. Regards Norm.

I have lots of info about a John Gowers born Stebbing Essex 1816 died 1872 who married Elizabeth at Stebbing in 1840 , but his father was Thomas Gowers  of Stebbing. I also have info about his children Esther, Rachel and Anna,  and many of his grandchildren, if they are part of your family I am happy to share the info with you, but am not happy to put all the info on this site as I believe family info is for family members. Armed Forces / Re: Military camp or prison? Shorncliffe camp
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 04:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi to all

There was a Military Hospital at Shorncliffe in WW2, as my great uncle, who had served in the Boer War and WW1 and was a medical doctor, was the CO of that hospital from the outbreak of war in 1939 till the end of the war, he was 58 in 39 and came out of retirement when the war broke out, and was given that job after 28 years as an army doctor till his earlier retirement a few years before the war started.

How about it being a hospital camp? Could be the wounded from the Boer war.

Suffolk / Re: Samuel Mowell born 1768 Suffolk?
« on: Friday 16 September 11 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Here is an extract from our first page of our Mowles family tree, and you can see we also have no idea of where Isaac came from, so we have never been able to find his parents, would need to know that to be able to search early church records.

"In about the year 1800, a young man arrived int he small Suffolk village of Whatfield, some two miles north of Hadleigh, and ten miles west of Ipswich.  In his early 20s, Isaac Mouls had found work as a labourer on one of the farms in the village, but it was not until he was 30, in the year 1808, that he was able to marry his 18 year old sweetheart Elizabeth Severing. They settled in a small cottage and raised a family of ........" and then our tree goes on for about 50 A4 pages of data showing births, marriages and death plus photos and certificates that we have obtained over the years.  You will appreciate we are sure that we cant just give that to people who are not family members, but if you do find a connection, please contact us, sorry  we are not prepared to just give our details without that connection and we cant find any mention of Hitchfleld as the home of any of our Mowles, family, but of course we only have what the certs, the census, and BDM details show, and they are not always very descriptive as we would like them to be.

the Mowles family of my husband lived mostly in Whatfield and also in Hadleigh, there are a few mentions of family members named Samuel, but if you dont think they are related to your Mowell family then no point in you having the family tree if you have already checked and found no connection. Sorry, we only share our research, which has taken about 40 years so far, with family members who can show a connection

The family of my husband, from his mothers side, are Mowles, they all come from Whatfield in Suffolk, and many of them still live in that area.  We have their history from the arrival of the first in the family in that area, Isaac Mowles/Moule/Moules/ or somesuch, as he could not read or write and his names was at first spelled many ways, but was finally arrived at as Mowles, and that is what the family have used since those early days.  We are happy to share family info with any other family member.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Ellen Elena BUTLER
« on: Sunday 26 June 11 22:31 BST (UK)  »
For all those researching the family of John James Shufflebottom and his wife Ellen nee Butler, we have now found the church in Ireland in which she was baptised and have obtained from them a copy of the entry of her baptism in that church and also a record of the baptism of her mother Johanna nee Barry, and in addition we have a record of the three children born to her father Garrett and his first wife prior to his marriage to Johanna nee Barry. If interested in details or copies, contact me and I am happy to share and provide copies of the above records to family members.
