Denbighshire / Looking for ?Margaret? Jane Kendricks Hughes
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
Morning everyone!  It's been about 5 years since I have been here on RootsChat, and I'm just as confused as ever.

With your help, I was able to get a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate (Mary Elizabeth HUGHES, born 14 July 1880 at Birch Hill, to Jane HUGHES, Domestic Servant, no father listed).

About 3 years after Gram was born, 'Nain' came to the USA and settled in the Chicago, IL area, and then Gram came over about 1897.  Now that I know 'Polly' was a HUGHES and not a BARRY (the name she used after she got to Chicago), I was able to find her immigration record.

BUT.... I have had no such luck with 'Nain'.  We believe she was born 1 April 1864 in Denbighshire area.  Her marriage certificate in 1902 to Richard John Jones, in PA, states that she was divorced in 1892 "due to drunkeness" and lists her name as JANE KENDRICK HUGHES.  SO WHERE do I find her birth certificate??  I find pages and pages of Jane Kendrick listed on the BMD BirthIndex, nor can I find where Jane Kendrick married a Hughes about 1878-1880.  At least she gave Gram what we believe a paternal last name MAYBE??? I need proof and I'm NOT having any luck.

Can you help??

Photo is Jane Kendrick Hughes Jones, gdaughter Jane Rosemary SHUMAN (dob: 21 Sep 1921), Richard John JONES, (second row) Mary Elizabeth 'Polly' Barry (nee: Hughes) SHUMAN and husband, Lewis Fredrick SHUMAN.

Many thanks to everyone  ;D , and to another site, "UKphonebook.com"

with your help, i looked up all current Slawson 's in Denbighshire, got 17 names and addresses and sent out letters to all.  rec'd 2 replies, and besides making new connections,  one darling went in search at Wrexham, and found Gram's birth registered, got a copy of it and sent me the certificate.  SHE WAS BORN 14 JULY 1880, not 1881 as we'd been told.  and it is Mary Elizabeth HUGHES.

so now i get to proceed back one more generation and find out just who 'Nain' was.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for leading me in the right direction to look.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Llangollen in the eighties, p 15, The Leader
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 00:47 BST (UK)  »
just found a newspaper article from 3 Dec 1976 that was sent to my aunt Jane Shuman Sheehan in Clearwater FL - she died june 2001 - and this was in some papers my bro. sent me.

it has an address on the back of one Miss S. Jones (?Sadie?), 4 Hughes Row, Acrefaie, Wrexham, Clwyd, N. Wales.  is Miss Jones still on this side of the sod?  or is there someone still out there who she was related to??

if other notes are correct, Sadie Jones ( 4 Oct 1905-13 July 1983) was the daughter of Catherine (katie?) and Moss Evans.  I haven't been able to verify any of this line yet.

THANK YOU Peckham.  have just sent them an email, so am hoping for some further information.

the thing that seems to be holding me up IE her birth record is not being able to view it on-line, therefore, I have no way to know if I have the correct one.  and I can't afford to keep buying a certificate that isn't right.

a friend who was visiting here went back 21 Jan, and sent me the one that I thought was correct.  had asked that he check for Llangollen, mother's name and father unknown - but because of his eyesite, he probably couldn't read the small print.  it's not the correct Mary Elizabeth Hughes.

appreciate your help.  thank you.

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Birth Record
« on: Wednesday 13 July 05 08:16 BST (UK)  »
am looking for the birth certificate of one Mary Elizabeth Hughes, DOB 14 July 1881 in Llangollen to Jane,  father unknown.  'Polly' was my grandmother, shows up in 1891 Wales Census as ADOPTED by William Berry and wife, Sarah Ann Slawson Berry.  She emigrated to US, Chicago, IL in 1897.  Still had contact w/Barry's in my lifetime;but, of course, I was too young and stupid to ask questions then.  She died in 1967.

I seem to constantly hit a brick wall.  Her eldest daughter destroyed all of her records after her death, because it showed that her father was unknown.

So where do I look for the birth record??  The adoption??  And I'm not sure if she was adopted legally or not. She emigrated using the name Hughes, but by the 1900 census, she was using the name Barry and still w/her mother.  Until your help, I did not know of the Hughes name.  It shows her on the 1881 WalesCensus in Sarah Ann's parents (George & Catherine Jones Slawson) home.

Please help!!  ALL assisstance is greatly appreciated.

HI EVERYONE.

i spent about 6 hours in SLC yesterday, and finally found that one mary e hughes came over on cunard line's aurania's only voyage to nyc - arriving sept 30, 1897.  she went to her mother's @1386 34th st, chicago, illonois.  it all works, now that y'all gave me the name HUGHES  ;D  the 1900 census shows her at that address - using the name of berry, but unmarried.

yet the machines will still NOT let me pull up a birth record, under the name hughes or berry.  any ideas?????  i have found that llangollen is in the parish of corwen - so have been looking for MARY E HUGHES, in denbighshire, carwen district, born july 1881.  where am i going wrong?????

;D  you guys are so awsome!!

found the 1871 census, and copies off all pages for llangollen.  because on it, is the household of george and catherine (jones) slawson - the pedgree chart from my aunt's estate.

but no matter what name i use, i canNOT find gram's birth - mary elizabeth, 14 july 1881. mother jane, father unknown.  would it have been registered at the church but not officially??? ???

do i have to come over there and bend my elbow at the jenny jones (diet Cole only)??

even had one of the folks working there helping and neither of us could find it.  does anyone have any ideas?? i was at the FHL for 6 hours - until they closed the building and couldn't find any more places to look.
