If you look back on this thread to 31 May 10 there are a couple of links which may help you. You can then apply on line to certificates.ie to buy.

The key to the answer of my problem was the marriage certificate. If you could obtain yours it may pinpoint the place in Cork and you may then be able to make a connection with Kirkcudbright.
English and Scottish farmers were encouraged to buy up debt ridden estates in Ireland owned by absentee landlords in 1850's.

I can do that, Trevor, as I have used Scotland's People for other family issues - wonderful site and great to see the records online. I shall use the code 3 and see what comes up. I have emailed the query to them today. They are holiday today so hope for a response shortly. I will post success or failure here! Thanks Susan

Her name is Margaret Irvine, Irish, aged 22 died 3/04/1889 aboard SS Jumna returning from Brisbane. Her family lived in Co Cavan Ireland so that would be her destination.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, there is a number with letter 'D' as Regr. General to whom reported and what looks like Eug9 and LB which I guess is logbook as source of information. Any ideas where I should look - Scotland as Glasgow was the Port of Registration or Ireland which was her home?
I would appreciate any guidance.

My great aunt died and was buried at sea in 1889 returning from Brisbane Australia to London aboard SS Jumna. I have found the record in BMD at Sea on Find My Past register at Glasgow. Is it possible to obtain a death certificate?

Yes, I understand that the title of Head Constable had a different connotation in the early days of the RIC. Thanks for your help in looking it up for me, Jack.

I shall follow up Slaters now, thank u.
I had to first use Herlihy to get the service/warrant number then use that to find the film reference to locate the service record.  :)

Thats wonderful news, Shane. Can I access Slaters via Ancestry or an Irish web site? Are the original RIC Indexes not what I was searching on microfilm at Kew?
It does indeed look like RTC on the cert but the birth details also say RIC so must be a slip of the pen
