Thanks so much for the link, Hallmark. It will take me some time to decipher the document, but it looks intriguing. And Jarchive – I'll follow up your reference and look forward to gleaning new information. Very grateful for your input too.

All the best,

Ros

Thanks for all your feedback, though I have to say that I have calmed down and found my way back to some old familiar pathways in Ancestry, many of them as absorbing as ever. I did resign from my full membership, however, once I realised that Fold3 and newspapers.com were of no use to me.

I have learned to take the public family trees with a grain of salt because many of them simply mimic vaguely inaccurate information picked up from other people. The most worrying example was a verified ancestor of my husband's married off to someone in Orlando, Florida which he, most decidedly, was not.

Should I just ignore it, or make an effort to set the record straight?

It has been some time since I have been involved in genealogical research and ages since I have been back to Rootschat, though I loved it as a reasonably early member. Family, financial and earthquake crises have kept me off line.

Recently I received a commission to write a family history and the people concerned kindly funded a new subscription to Ancestry (at great expense). What a disappointment! I used to be able to put in a name and fossick among the various options in my own way. Now I seem to get nothing but pre-digested suggestions (the same with the newish familysearch). It all seems like genealogy for dummies.

No doubt there are new things to be discovered, but I am currently feeling grumpy enough to vent my spleen.

Sorry!

Hi Anthony,

I'm so sorry I never got back to you or the others about your useful and interesting information. It has been some time since I was on Rootschat. My wider family demonstrated little interest in all my discoveries and with earthquakes etc (Christchurch) I more or less dropped my research. Now I am all fired up again and planning (well, dreaming about) another trip to Ireland!

Many thanks,

Ros

Hi Jacq,

There are two small mentions of Richard Tear on the Papers Past site (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz). The first is from the Nelson Evening Mail in November 1891:

'Today in Chambers, before the Registrar Of the Supreme Court, on the motion of Mr Harley, letters of administration of the estate of George Tear, deceased, were granted to Richard Tear, next of kin.'

The second one is also from the Nelson Evening Mail in 1898:

'Lloyds Newspaper is inquiring on behalf of friends for "Richard Tear of Dalston, who went to Nelson about 1852; he thought of going to the Dunmore (sic) copper mines. Brother Jacob asks. No news since 1860." A Mr Richard Tear, a well-known resident, lives at present in Stoke.'

THe 1851 census has a Richard Tear living with his brother Jacob, father William and numerous other family members in St Leonard Shoreditch. This Richard was born in Bedford c1824.

Hope this helps.

I hope I didn't get a bit carried away. A closer look at the Nicholas and William I saw shows that are a bit earlier than your ones.

NZ Archives site http://archway.archives.govt.nz has files for Nicholas Quinn of Makikihi, but I think he could be the other one as well. Ditto William Quinn. Look for files at Timaru and possibly Dunedin and/Christchurch.

Hi Fiona,

A great place for you to start looking for your Quinns is:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nzlscant

Type Quinn into their search engine and you'll get dozens of hits. I've already spotted Nicholas and William but I'll leave the fun up to you.

Cheers,

Ros
