Thanks for the info Cougar - I'm pretty sure it's my ancestors. It's another piece of the puzzle for me to work with...

Cheers,
K :-)

I'm researching the Taylor's from Bermondsey too. My great grandfather was William Taylor who married Harriet Swannell. He was born in 1840. They later lived in Belham St Camberwell.

Hi Sue..
My great great grandfather was James William Taylor who was a corn porter in 1904. His son Frederick James Taylor was my great grandfather and he lived at 19 Rudford Rd in Rotherhithe in 1904. His occupation was lead worker. Apparently there were five brothers and I have no idea of their names unfortunately. Frederick James Taylor married Florence Croft in 1904 at the Church of St Katharines in Eugenia Street, Bermondsey/Rotherhithe. The church was demolished in 1964. I wonder if there's a connection?

Hi Gang - I'm back after receiving some very useful information and even managing to get some birth certificates and a marriage certificate sent over from the UK.
Could someone do a 1901 census lookup for me? Name: Edith Clements, age 12, born Southwark London, civil parish - Bermondsey. This is my great grandmother and I would love to get her parents names and their occupations. Also in the same year could someone do a census look up for who was living at 23 Willow Walk, Bermondsey - if I'm lucky it will be the same family. Many Many Thanks - It's been hard work but I'm finally getting somewhere I hope....
Cheers
K :-)

Thanks for the information Reys & Cougar - I think Great Grandfather Taylor may have had his pub a few years later. Is there any way of looking up a census to see if he was there a few years later? Wow - Johns pub list was impressive - had a look but think the pubs mentioned may be in the wrong area - thanks anyway.  Cherry Garden Street sounds like the right address, I just need to find the right year.  I'm going to make a few more phone calls to see if I can get a birth date for old Frederick. This will help narrow things down for sure.  :-)
Now I've started to do this research I'm into it - it's amazing to see so many others doing the same.  K ;-)

Thanks Cougar & Sue...

Apparently there were 7 brothers all Taylors who ran a pub called "The Cherry Tree" somewhere in Bermondsey. Frederick Taylor, my great grandfather married Florence (not sure of her maiden name - she was raised by an aunt) she was very young - only 16 apparently.

Most of them were born either in Guys Hospital or St Olaves hospital. I'm struggling to find dates of birth.
Great Grandfather Frederick Taylor was probably born around 1870. (I'm also on the lookout for old school friends - do you know Deptford Park Primary School in Evelyn Street? I went there between 1965 & 1968.) I'll be phoning a great aunt who lives in London later tonight to see if she remembers her dads birthday - she is very old so she may not even know who I am when I call - lets hope she can recall her fathers birthday (Fred Taylor) Fingers crossed.

I'm looking for information on my ancestors Frederick Taylor and his wife Florence Taylor nee Croft. Great Grandfather Taylor used to host illegal boxing matches in Bermondsey circa 1900.
