I spoke to my dad Leonard Roy today and he seemed to remember a family member who was leader of a dance troup in Great Yarmouth.  Me and my dad bothe live in East Leake where the family moved to from Wallasey.  Did the sister in Wales marry a Hewell, my dad seems to remember that?

Many thanks for all that.  It was a surprise to find a relative buried in Eritrea.  I hope at some stage to attack the Esther area though I'm not sure how.

May I ask whereabouts you live and if there was a dancer in your family?

Yes, my Aunt Norma had downs syndrome and died about 14 years ago now.  My Grandad moved to Nottinghamshire along with all his children probably 50+ years ago, do you have any idea why they swapped surnames and any history related to Esther/Abraham?  It has been difficult finding any records beyond them and all the name changes haven't helped!

Many thanks for that.  We have a death certificate for Henry Oliver Goldsmith Stowell, a birth cert for Henry Rufus (who lived out his days in wales and my dad Leonard Roy remembers visiting his farm there as a child).  Also have a marriage cert for a Henry Smith Stowell and Elizabeth Orton, marriage cert for Henry O G Stowell and Elizabeth Thomas.  We also have a birth cert for a Henry Oliver Gould son of Henry Smith and Elizabeth Smith nee Orton from 1872 in Bolton - we think this is what has confused things as don't know how relevant or correct it is.

Any light you can shed is appreciated!

Dear all, many thanks for your help on this subject so far but things have taken a more confusing turn.  We now have the birth certificate for HenryOliver Gould Smith for 17th August 1872 in Blton.  Father is Henry Smith, Plasterer, mother is Elizabeth Smith nee Orton.  The only marriage I can find for Elizabeth is to a Henry Smith Stowel (single L) in March 1882 in Salford.  Any ideas/help, pretty please???????

We've got a major headache.  We have a Henry Oliver Goldsmith Stowell marrying in April 1897 saying his dad is Henry Stowell (deceased).  Thers is no record of HOGS before this and the only entry we have on record is the 1901 census living in Poulton cum Seacombe, born in Bolton 1873.  Any ideas????

Hi.  Does anyone know if there is a way of finding out about someone changing their name.  I have a couple of conflicting names on my family tree from around 1873-1897 and the only thing that could explain it is a name change, although we haven't worked out why a change would have happened in the first place.  Any suggestions would be welcome!

So, the birth cetificate for William Edward Webster has arrived and it looks like we were originally fed a red herring with the original information.  Turns out that his father was actually a William H Webster from Halifax and we have traced him quite far back on the Halifax census reports as living in the same address stated on William E's birth cert.  So, thanks for your help and I'm now going back to the Parish records for Halifax which is where I started in the first place!
