Inverness / MacDonald/MacKinnon from Skye?
« on: Saturday 30 November 19 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for any information on Donald MacDonald and his wife Flora MacKinnon. They are the parents of Christina MacDonald 1799?-1869. The only mention I can find of them is on Christina's death certificate. I don't know where Christina was born but I know she died in Roag on Skye. Her husband was Kenneth MacInnes. I have found no trace of any of these individuals on Scotlandspeople (with the exception of Christina's DC) I know this isn't much to go on but I would be thankful for any help I may receive.

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for information on the parents of my 3x Great Grandmother Flora Cameron. I believe they were Angus Cameron and Anne Campbell. I am unable to confirm this. She went on to marry Ewen MacKinnon around 1804. I would appreciate any help anyone may be able to give.

Many Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if anyone has any information on the parents of My 2x great grandfather Michael Shields. I believe Michael was born in Ireland around 1845. There is some mention in the family that he was born in Donegal. His parents were Dennis Shields and Mary Gallacher. the only mention I have of the is on Michael's marriage and death certificates. Michael moved to Scotland sometime after his birth, I presume with his parents and died in Helensburgh in 1914.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Re: John Brown or McCulloch?

Hi Anne,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I have had a look at the BC and this is certainly him. He appears to have been illegitimate as you say. All we can say for sure is that Alexander McCulloch could not be the father as, according to his birth certificate, he had died in Lancaster, England some four years previously.

Many thanks for your help.

Lanarkshire / John Brown or McCulloch?

Hi Everyone!

I wonder if someone might be able to help with a problem I am having. I was looking for the birth certificate for my great grandfather John Brown. I already had his marriage and death certificate which gave his parents names as William Brown and Jane Crop but I have been unable to find it.

From his MC and DC I was able to narrow down his year of birth to around 1897. The problem I have is that William and Jane were not married until 1903 (in Inverness). I found that Jane Crop had been previously married to an Alexander McCulloch in 1882 in Calton? district of Camlachie, Glasgow. I know that this is the same Jane Crop as both MC's have her parents names as William Crop and Margaret Boyd. I haven't been able to find birth details under either potential fathers. As a result I am not sure where and when (exactly) John was born.

What I am trying to find out is who is John Brown's father? Is it William Brown, who then went on to marry his mother six years later or, was it Alexander McCulloch (or even someone else!?)?

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Hi Folks,

I am still trying to find out more information on John Ross. I have recently been on Scotlandspeople and have come across the following details on a death certificate,

Name: John Ross (Widower)
Date and Place of Death: 27th December 1857, Earlish (or Carlish), Snizort
Sex: Male
Age: 73
Father: Angus Ross, Tenant (Deceased)
Mother: Gormil Ross nee Ross (as far as I'm able to make out)
Cause of Death: Asthma
Buried: Burial Place, Uig
Informant: John Ross, son

I am wondering whether this is our man? If not, then I could tick this one off my list.

Hi

I was wondering whether someone might help me overcome a bit of a brick wall I've hit. I'm looking to find the forebears of Ann Gordon born about 1811 in Kilmuir, Skye. I know she married a Donald MacLeod and her parents I believe were Alexander Gordon and Catherine MacLean Though I'm not 100% sure. I have tried and failed to find any information on ScotlandsPeople. So if anyone has any help or information it will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Amina

I too am related to Ranald (my 2 x Great Grandfather) through his son Hugh. I wonder whether you or anyone else might have some clues as to the parentage of John Ross and Margaret MacDonald as I seem to have hit a brick wall there.

On a side note, I don't know whether you are aware of Ranald's daughter Mary? She is mentioned in a couple of publications, "One Hundred and Five Songs of Occupation from the Western Isles of Scotland" and "The Great Book of Skye" (the latter having a photograph of her) which has a brief biography of her which mentions both Ranald and John in passing. She is credited with helping to pass on many gaelic songs to her employer and folk music collector/archivist Frances Tolmie.
