Anyone come across a John Urquhart Rodger b1921 Collessie, Fife. Married a Agnes Oliver in Hawick in 1945, but looking for what regiment he joined in WW2, any help for his granddaughter would be appreciated. Been told he was among the first troops in Belsen.

Stirlingshire / Re: Help please re. Broad St and Baker St - Stirling

AuntieMomo, the lower half of Baker has hardly changed since about 1900, and 14 Baker street is the auld Derby Bar Close. Your presuming that your relative may have fell from a window overlooking Baker Street, but the tenements were through the close. In all likelihood that is where she lived and it is possible she fell from there. At that side of Baker street was where most of the tenements flats were, if you get a chance, go through 24 Baker Street close and you will see what I mean, also the Star Bar Close was the same with tenements. Better still, the last time I was back in Stirling, I took the chance to go up these closes, also I went up to the car park at Dalgliesh court and looked at the backs of the buildings and you get an idea of what it was like in 1900.

Midlothian / Re: Nicholas Jasper Mansabuis
« on: Friday 04 January 19 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Very helpful indeed. This lead has now put me onto his name which was Neocles Jaspis Mousabinies and through him to Thomas de Quincy who was in Edinburgh at the same time, who mentions him to Wordsworth. I have turned up a signature which has the Neocles and the Jaspis spelt the same way. A start at last, thank you for the pointer.

Midlothian / Nicholas Jasper Mansabuis

Hi all, got a problem with this guy, can anybody help? First I'm not too sure about the spelling on the surname, It might be Mansabuis, Munsabinis, Mausibinis, Monsabinis or a combination of all. The signature is hard to decipher. Looks like a greek name. I have an address in January 1850 of 1 India Street, Edinburgh, but I can't trace him at all, looked at Edinburgh Directory, census, etc, but nope. But I know he was in Edinburgh during all of 1850. That's it, any help really would be much appreciated, thanks. The signature with the Mr Nicholas is not his writing but as recorded down by another, the one with N.J. M............... is his actual signature.

Roxburghshire / Re: Beattie family in Hawick
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 17:42 BST (UK)  »
I understand this feed has been on the go for a wee while, but can anyone give any help. The question is, Is the Sculptor William Francis Beattie of Hawick related to Thomas Beattie the sculptor of Langholm? I have come to a dead end, but I see people here have traced their Beattie family trees in Langholm, so has anyone found definite proof? William's Father was Thomas, a sculptor, his father William was a photographer and lived in Hawick. If anyone has a link between the two families it would be much appreciated.

Midlothian / Re: Charles H. Mackay - Edinburgh
« on: Tuesday 30 January 18 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
This all makes sense, he was a Commission Agent for Lambert and Butler of London, when in Edinburgh. His office was at 34 St. Andrew Square, and he keep lodgings in 59 Frederick Street. It would appear, that he left Edinburgh in either 1889/90, as an agent he would travel around the country. I have him in Edinburgh in 1883/1884. And the dates for his death in 1917 and the age on the 1881 census correspond. Thanks for this.
