James Letting is a cousin of my 4x Great Grandfather and got transported to Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) for life for stealing a horse. When he was there, he escaped from gaol and lived as a bushranger for several months before handing himself in after learning of a proclamation promising to pardon any bushrangers that surrender themselves. This didn't turn out to be the case for James though who was transported on to increasingly severe penal colonies and ultimately drowned at the age of 27 at Macquarie Harbour. It must have been especially terrible for him believing as he did that he was meant to receive a pardon in return for his surrender.
