Wow gortonboy seems to have hit the nail squarely on the head, the birth cert looks like ellen tobin not jobin and I have searched and found an ellen tobin almost the right age in blackburn 1861 census. Now you have given me all this info it sets me off on a different path. The info regarding his service was priceless. Just curious have you previously researched these routes? you got back very quickly. A very special thanks to everyone it was much appreciated, and his birth was indeed 1841 in ireland to answer the previous post. Anything more is greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / 47th lancashire regiment of foot

Hi all
hope someone can help out with my gt grandads service, he was John Mcmahon probably in the above regiment and later a Sergeant  in the North Lancs Regiment when it was reorganised in 1881. What I do know is his first son john was born 1870 in the west indies (that coincides with the above being in Bermuda 1868) second son born 1871 at  fleetwood barracks, by then he was a lance corporal and I have the birth cert (my grandfather). First daughter ellen born 1874 preston, second daughter Hanora born 1877 east indies and by 1879 he was back at preston by now a Sergeant, 1891 census shows him as a resident in the household for the 1st time.  Now my queries, what campaigns were they involved in that account for his travels and what exactly were they doing in bermuda, are service records available for NCOs.

                                       Any info appreciated thanks
