Back again , dog with a bone syndrome, something was annoying me about this location why why why put a boot and shoe maker away from lots of customers? did i miss something, in my haste to look at guys directory for 117 I had just skipped over the other entries, so went back again then i saw 5 vintners and a hotel, grocers post office etc so why put them away from either outside the barracks or down at where the next large gathering would be i.e. Dillons Cross. then another thought hit me i was told the P.O had moved from the top NE corner of Military Road to its present position, but the maps show a hotel near this area, ;
so back to the directory, 120 Barrackton, Hotel ,grocers Post office etc owner MR Burke, one of the maps shows the hotel as the Garrison Hotel , with Post Office as part of a block beginning on the eastern corner of Military road extending on both sides of the corner, ok so next checked another directory 1884 and the owner of the Garrison hotel is a Mr. Burke, so the property showing immediatly prior to 120 is 117 does this mean that 117 faces the barracks but is just "on" old youghal road, but O Y R continues at the number 180 Nw corner of military road.
Another check here same directory Military road ;..... Cork barracks to Wellington road Richd Burke owner Garrison hotel , no numbers for hotel, numbering starts then with Number 1. If this makes sense then 117 was opposite main gate of barracks to the left, the site now part of Bellevue Court apartments.
I will still to get all this confirmed if possible but that's all for now rgds John
as an aside if your Ggrandfather birth document contains other births, you might note that just below his there is a birth of a daughter to the bootmaker Mr. Mullis living next door in 118.
(118 is the number given not 117)
