Thank you for all your replies.

The photo belongs to my cousin and we are trying to work out who the 3 x Great Grandma is.   I will need to seek her permission first before I post it.

I do live in Canberra and someone suggested I could probably have it dated here at one of the Institutions.  Maybe the National Portrait Gallery or the National Library or Australian Archives.

Does anyone know anything about a Watts Studio and I am pretty sure it says Toowoomba?

I have a portrait postcard and this is stamped on it.  From the clothing and hairdo it looks like it could have been taken in the 1860's.

Thanks.

The Gustav Hahm I was following up in the USA isn't my man.  This means I need to dig deeper in Australia.

Again, thank you Shelly for your reply.  Very much appreciated.  I am going to rule this person out and keep looking in Australia (which I have been doing forever).

Thank you Shelly for your kind reply to my question.

Would that 1920 request mean that person was in America at that time?  Just trying to understand how the system works and I want to get it right.

Hi Maddys52.  Thank you for your reply.

I viewed that Nat.Card and it tells me very little.  I need to have definite proof this is him so I will see if anyone in the US can help me out with further information.  I posted on the USA site.  In the meantime I will keep researching here.  I had the obituaries from Trove but thank you.

Cheers Glenys

Carl Gustav Hahm born 1873 in Germany arrived in Australia with his family, on board the Lammershagen. His Father Leopold Hahm and his Mother Wilhelmina Steinke and siblings.

I have found no trace of Gustav as he was known in Australia after 1921. He lived in Queensland.  I found a record below for a Gustav Hahm and I am hoping I can prove if this is the person I am researching.  Is there more information available on this record, like where he is coming from or a shipping record or family members?

There is a USA index card for a Gustav Hahm. (H 500) It states date of Naturalization 9 March 1925. Country of birth Germany and born 1875. It lists court district Illinois,Indiana,Wisconsin,Iowa.

There is a bit more information on him on the Australian site of Rootschat.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide me with.

Thank you to Sue & Majm

Siblings are Johan Leopold Paul b 1868, Augusta Wilhelmine Annie b 1870, Carl Gustav b 1873 ( who I am researching), Ada Marie Emily b 1878, Emma Louise b 1880, Anna Margaretha b 1884.

Majm, I wasn't aware of a US RChat board.  Thank you.  I will follow that up.

I saw on Ancestry a Gustav Hahm in the US Naturalization Record Index.  It only seems to be an Index Card so I don't know if or how it is possible to get more information.  Is that something I can follow up on the US RChat board also? I have no idea of a ship or a date and that is why I asked if there may be a record in Australia of a departure, and living in Canberra I wondered if there were somewhere here I may be able to find that information.  The index card states date of Naturalization  9 March 1925. Country of birth Germany and born 1875.  Not 1873 as I stated earlier.

No one in the extended family (which are all cousins now), knows anything as we were only told this family story up to 50 years ago of his disappearance and the possibility he drowned out west in   Queensland but I have not been able to locate anything in Trove and I have looked into missing persons in Queensland but found nothing.

Because it is not such a common name it could be that he went to America but I would like to have proof.

Thank you TreeSpirit.

Yes, I believe he could have been in Queensland until at least 1922.  I have not been able to find anything about him and family lore many decades ago stated he went outback in Queensland and may have drowned.  His mother died in 1933 and no one was able to contact him.  All I have on him was that he was the black sheep of the family.  He wore an eye patch and sold clothes props from his horse and cart.

If he did travel to America would there be a record here of his leaving Australia and if so where would I look for this?

Your help is much appreciated.

Glenys
