Thank you AncesStory that is very helpful and helps to explain his move to Edinburgh. Amazing we are talking about Napoleonic wars!

Thanks so much Alasdair that looks like the correct school. The dates add up too. She was born 1921. She then went on to secretarial college in Queen Street and became a shorthand typist.
I am amazed how many small private schools existed at this time. Edinburgh has obviously always had a huge number of pupils in the private system
Thanks again

World War Two / Fathers movements
« on: Sunday 07 April 13 18:02 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in my fathers movements during WW2. He didn't like to talk about it and any information I have is vague. He was from Edinburgh and told me that he was at an army reserve camp when war was declared. I have a picture of him in Q battery 34th training regiment of the Royal Artillery in Preston in Oct 1940. I know that he was twice in troup carriers in Scapa Flow that were torpedoed and survived despite not being able to swim. He was also in Greece at some point. Any other information would be much appreciated.

I do not have the actual marriage certificate but on her death certificate it says that she is a widow of Edward Howlett or Durrant. I dont have birth certificate of Edward junior either just info from Ancestry   which gives registration district as Birmingham.

Thanks for replys.
This is a very confusing family to follow (my husbands side not mine!!!). Graham I can discount 1 and 2 and have a feeling 3 is the reason. Olivia had changed her name before marriage. Her mothers name was Nixon which she has used but her father was given as William Peter Leaky on birth certificate. In 1891 census she uses name Quigley as her mother is living with Henry Quigley cant find a marriage. In the 1901 census she uses name Ryan as she appears to have been adopted by her Aunt when mother and sisters moved to Dundee. She then marries and becomes Mrs Durrant in 1909 but cant find any sign of them in 1911 census. Son is born in Birmingham in 1913 by which time they are using name Howlett. She then marries again in 1922 to a Edward Oliver Augustus Moore in Liverpool. She thens moves to Edinburgh and dies in Dundee. Olivia therefore has had 7 names during her life!
No wonder I am confused.
The other confusing thing on the birth certificate of son Edward his fathers occupation is given as master watch maker. To have gone from architectects clerk to master watchmaker in 4 years seems unlikely. Her son later takes on the name Moore from second husband and becomes Edward James Howlett Moore.

Does anyone have any idea why a man would change his surname. On a relatives death certificate it gives name of her first husband as Howlett or Durrant. I have her marriage to Edward James Durrant in 1909 and a birth of a son Edward James Howlett in 1913. No sign of either name on 1910 census.
Any suggestions would be most welcome

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Lauder Family Armadale
« on: Friday 11 January 13 14:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Lauder family who lived in Armadale. James Lauder b 1844 married Helen Kennedy b 1854.They had six children James b 1874,John b 1877 Jane b 1879,Marion b 1881 and Helen b 1883 and Janet. Interestingly none of them married so it was the end of the line. I have their birth and deaths but I wondered if anyone can remember them and has any stories to tell. They lived in St Helens Cottage Station Rd. James appeared to run the Station Post Office. Helen and Marion were teachers and Jane a nurse.
They were cousins of my fathers and I can vaguely remember going to visit the sisters when I was wee. I am just curious to find out anything about them.

That is the correct family. Will double check Couper but I think I have already looked at it. I can't find him in 1881 census either. 1891 census has him born Halkirk but I have Wick.
