The Common Room / Can anyone tell me what Ventor means please
« on: Monday 15 January 18 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking at the Will of my ancestor Joseph Butler, a Gentleman who lived in Bradford, Yorkshire. The will was proved 11th September 1704 in Bradford and basically he left everything in trust for his wife Abigail and his sons by her.

He also stated that -his disobedient son Joseph 'by a former Ventor' is not to have one farthing.

I guess a Ventor is a former partner but would she be a wife or just the babies mother- making Joseph illegitimate.

I haven't found it on any of the translation sites I have searched, is it more likely to be a derogatory slang term?

Joseph's birth does not mention his mother, just his father.

Any help appreciated.

Cumberland / Joseph Wren of Crossthwaite, buried but no record of dying.
« on: Saturday 27 December 14 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for help tracing the death certificate for my 4x Great Grandfather Joseph Wren. His burial record shows that he was buried on the 11th November 1846 at Borrowdale Crossthwaite, Cumberland and that he was aged 87. Unfortunately I can't locate a death record for him.

His wife Nancy had predeceased him by twenty years and in 1841 he was living in Rossthwaite, Crossthwaite, Cumberland - HO107/156/3/8/11

There is a Joseph Wren who died Mar 1846 in Cockermouth but he is a 1 1/2 year old child and I haven't found any other likely suspects.

Any help appreciated.

Derry (Londonderry) / Camil's of Rocktown Maghera
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in three families named Camil shown on the 1831 census at Rocktown, Maghera, Loughinsholin

House number 77 Patrick Camil (3 males, 1 female)
House number 78 Catherine Camil (3 males, 3 females)
House number 79 Hugh Camil (4 males, 4 females)

Is there any way I can find out who the rest of the occupants are on-line?

Cheers
J Graham

Yorkshire (West Riding) / sally/ sarah stansfield
« on: Saturday 29 October 11 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my 3x Great Grandmother Sarah / Sally Stansfield and I was wondering if anyone  had come across her in their own research?

I believe that she was born 1799-1801 in ERINDGEN TODMORDEN/ LANGFIELD YORKSHIRE, depending on the source of information.

When she married WILLIAM BARKER on the 7th AUGUST 1829 in HALIFAX YORKSHIRE both of them were widow/ widowers and they then had:

JOSIAH/ JESSE BARKER (1830), JOSEPH BARKER (1832), SARAH BARKER (1834), GEORGE BARKER (1835), SAMUEL BARKER (1838), RICHARD BARKER  (1839)

I have found that some of her husband’s children from his first marriage were baptised with their parents showing William and Sally rather than William and Grace.

Census entries for Sarah/ Sally Barker
1841 H0107/305/7/28/3 BLIND LANE TODMORDEN, Sally's occupation was a baker
1851 H0107/2289/149/15 TOAD CARR TODMORDEN, Sally's occupation was a bread baker (if looking on ancestry comes under BANKER)
1861 RG9/3236/29/11- 1 PEER ST TODMORDEN, no occupation given
1871 RG10/4328/51/2- 5 DALTON STREET TODMORDEN, no occupation given
1881 RG11/4358/54/40- 19 TOAD CARR STANSFIELD, no occupation given

Sally Barker died of Old Age, January 06, 1882, age 84, 24 BROAD STREET STANSFIELD YORKS. Informer Sarah Crowther daughter- present at death.

I believe William died 1859-1861 and on the 1861 census Sarah was a widowed head of the household. Also present was an Ann Stansfield, an unmarried daughter born 1817 in Stansfield. Ann Stansfield died unmarried 1869 in Todmorden.

In 1871 and 1881 Sally Barker was living with another daughter Elizabeth and her husband William Mitchell and family. Elizabeth was born 1821 in Heptonstall / Todmorden, so she was too old to be William Barker's daughter (William and Sally married 1829), even though she was married under the name Barker: William Mitchell married Elizabeth Barker 2 April 1848 St Chad, Rochdale.
Elizabeth died before her mother, which is why Sally was living with Sarah Crowther when she died.

1841 census shows an Elizabeth Barker at home age 30 but I believe this is one of William's first marriage children, who went on to marry Robert Greenwood, particularly as she is still at home on the 1851 census  when the above Elizabeth was already married to William Mitchell.

Ann Stansfield was a lodger with her younger sister Elizabeth Stansfield / Barker / Mitchell and family on the 1851 census HO107/2289/307/24 HANGING DITCH TODMORDEN but she was shown as Hannah.  Unfortunately, I don't know where either of the girls were on the 1841 census and I have not been able to track down their births, nor have I any information on their father, Sally/ Sarah's first husband, or any further knowledge of her birth. I had wondered if her first husband might have had some connection to the baking industry as it was quite a skilled job for a woman to have.

I would be interested to know if anyone has come across these Stansfield's and any information or clues you could give me about these people would be gratefully received.

Sincerely
J Graham
