Huntingdonshire / Re: Sarah FAREY b abt 1786 Holywell cum Needingworth

Hi
My name is Peter and I am doing a one-place study of Holywell-cum-Needingworth, including all its people, buildings, maps, documents, history etc.  I only moved here 8 years ago, and only started my study a few months ago and so have little to add to what has been said in this thread already about Sarah Farey. There may be more I find out over the years as I manage to link people together and get more data.

I note on the 1841 census there is a John Golding b 1811 living with his family (wife Ann, children Joseph, Maria, George) in Needingworth High Street. He might be one of Sarah's 6 children, as well James who is with her in the 1851 census. (I think James is in Huntingdon on the 1861 census.)  Sarah Golding seems to be living with Sarah Ayres in the 1841 census, and it seems the same Sarah Ayres lives next door to her in the 1851 census.

I do not know where this Sarah Ayres fits in but the Ayres are well represented in Holywell-cum-Needingworth records. I have some details on at least 60 of them.

The Hunts Family History Society are publishing a transcript of our PRs soon and I am looking forward to them. Of its nature I am not able to spend as much time on each family and individual as I would like to, so will make more errors than I would like.  But I am hoping to build up a fuller picture as the years go on.

I hope this is of interest.  If you are at all interested in people who have lived in our village(s) do feel free to let me know at * and I can swap information with you and keep you informed of progress.

Thanks Peter.

I'll keep your offer in mind. At the moment the only Holywell links in my tree are to Sarah Farey & her mother Mary. Sarah (Farey) & James Golding (sometimes recorded as Goulden)'s daughter Ann (b 1806) is my wife's ancestor & she apparently went to live in Hertfordshire. She married a James Tomlin in St Albans on 26 Dec 1826.

Please let me know when the PR's are published. Maybe they'll help track down Mary.

Thanks again
John

I've come across a couple of examples recently where there were a number of illegitimate children, but apparently by the same father. They appeared to be stable relationships, just that they didn't marry for whatever reason.

David

Interesting. In your experience do the children take the mother's or father's name?

It's unusual for only the mother to be mentioned on baptisms, especially where there are multiple children.

It usually implies illegitimacy

Agreed. I just find the concept of 4 illegitimate children to be a little odd.

Hunts Marriage Index shows a marriage in 1804 at Holywell between Saray Farey and James Goulden. Both were otp.

Thanks.

Yes that is the marriage. It's the first time I've seen the spelling "Goulden" though. That should help with finding James' relatives.

Hello John,
this imfo is from, British Isles Vital Records Index on C/D.
Hollywell, all children of Mary, only, no father given.
Sarah26.1.1783
Sarah 30.7.1786
Ann 19.7.1789
John 19.7.1789.
Margaret.

Thanks Margaret. I wasn't aware of the other children.

It's unusual for only the mother to be mentioned on baptisms, especially where there are multiple children. I haven't been able to find a Farey marriage in Holywell yet.

Hi board,

I'm looking for any information on the Farey family of Holywell, particularly the family of Sarah Farey, b abt 1786, bapt 30 July 1786. Her mother is apparently given as Mary at baptism (I have not seen the record).

She married James Golding of Cambridgeshire in Holywell on 12 Oct 1804 (I have not seen this record either) They had 6 children before James died in 1820. Sarah died in 1857 in St. Ives.

Thanks

Hi Debbie!

Just found this thread while I was working on my tree. I BELIEVE William Bradgate b1540 in Peatling Parva was my 11th GGF. Does he turn up in the Nichols pedigree?

If so would it be possible to view the line?

Thanks

Hi Carole,

Thanks for the comment. I think it is quite possible "George Burfield" was not at the wedding. He is certainly not one of the witnesses, & Sarah was married from her husband's address (although I understand that could have been to save costs on Banns?).

I do however think he existed. John J. Burfield is on the 1901 census as a lodger with Sarah, so at some point it appears they both took his name.

I will have a look at the Coventry marriage to see if it could fit in.

Trish,

There is a John Allen, master butcher, age 37,  living at 7 Stafford St, Wolverhampton in the 1851 Census. His wife Ann is given as age 53 & born in West Derby. The only child with them is Hannah Woods age 30, a step-daughter born in Liverpool. There is record of a Hannah Woods born to Richard & Anne Woods in Liverpool in 1821, which (kind of) all fits. Presumably John A. traded in the first Ann for a younger model, if they are the same person. It doesn't explain where Sarah came from as she was born in 1849. Presumably IF this is my family she came along with the second Ann......

I guess I should search for an Ann born in Derby in 1825, & with a 2-year old daughter Sarah, in the 1851 census, but that sounds like a mammoth undertaking..........

Thanks again Carole & Trish

John
