Derbyshire Resources & Offers / 1847 Tithe map for Scropton - transcription
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Here is a Tithe map and index of names for Scropton, Derbys, sorted by occupier and dated 1847:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~laetoli/scroptontitheindex.html
N.B. One or two underlessees are in the description column.

I plan to do Marston-on-Dove & Hoon in Derbyshire and Hanbury, Fauld, Marchington, Tutbury, Hanbury & Anslow just over the border in Staffordshire. Unfortunately, there is no map or index for Hatton, Derbyshire. There is a reference to some corresponence about Hatton which I've yet to look at but it probably explains why Hatton isn't covered by the tithes.

I've already transcribed the tithe map and index for Draycott-in-the-Clay, Staffs, dated 1839 which is here:

Take care,

Derbyshire Resources & Offers / Link: Scropton Parish Records - Transcription
« on: Tuesday 03 May 05 02:26 BST (UK)  »
WORK IN PROGRESS: The web page below is moving towards a first draft of a transcription of the 1680 to 1809 Parish Records for Scropton, Derbyshire which are not on the IGI.

I haven't got anywhere near halfway and there are a lot of questionable data here because I am working from very poor quality images. I hope to resolve/correct most of these by reference to better quality images once I have completed this first draft. Ultimately, I will index and tabulate this data to make it easier to read. I apologise for publishing such poor quality work but I will update this page regularly and ultimately hope to deliver something usable.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~laetoli/scroptonparishrecords1680to1809.html

Note on Copyright: I have been reliably informed that Church of England Parish registers belong to the Parish Church concerned and its incumbant vicar. They do NOT belong to the Record Office to which they have been passed. The Church of England do NOT claim copyright. Transcriptions and photographic images of C of E registers can be copyrighted by the transcriber and photographer respectively.

Take care,
Paul

Derbyshire / Scropton parish records
« on: Wednesday 09 February 05 09:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Is it possible to access the Scropton church records online, if so where and how? A while ago someone very kindly told me a while ago that a Mathew and Elizabeth REEVE had a son, John REEVE, christened, 27 Jul 1788 at Scropton. I would really like to know if they had any other children and to find out Mathew's birth & marriage details.

Take care,
Paul

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census look-up please
« on: Tuesday 08 February 05 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Please would some kind soul do a Scropton, Derbyshire 1851 census look-up for a David Allen born about 1830 who is probably a farmer but he might be with his father Thomas Allen who is listed as a farmer on David's marriage certificate of 1857. I'm particularly interested in his place of birth and I'm also interested in other members of the household and their ages, occupations and places of birth.

From his will, I know that he had siblings, Thomas, John and Mary. He was certainly farming in Scropton by 1855, was married in 1857 and died in 1860. I have no trace of him before then.

Scropton was sometimes classified as Staffordshire for census purposes.

Thanks,
Paul

Glamorganshire / Please help me past this dead-end
« on: Thursday 03 February 05 10:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I know that my grand-father Reginald JONES had two sisters Lilian JONES (b.1882, Penarth, Glamorgan) and Elsie JONES (b.1885, Penarth, Glamorgan). Because my father died when I was very young and my grand-father before I was born, there are no family members whom I can ask about them. I took out an advert in the Western Mail but got no replies, previous web appeals have got me nowhere and I can't find a will for their father, Daniel. With names as common as these, what can I do? I can't afford to buy every marriage certificate in the registry in the vague hope of finding them. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

These are not distant relatives from the murky past but my great aunts. Their descendants, if they had any, would be my second cousins. I would SO MUCH like to find out something about them or, better still, talk to their descendants.

This is them from the 1891 and 1901 censuses:

1901 census of 44 Monthermer Road, Cathays, Cardiff

Daniel Jones Head 49 St Athan, Glamorgan Coal Foreman
Mary J Jones Wife 53 Cardiff, Glamorgan
Lilian Jones Daugh 19 Penarth, Glamorgan
Elsie Jones Daugh 16 Penarth, Glamorgan
Reggie Jones Son 14 Cardiff, Glamorgan School

1891 census of 31 Richards St., Cathays, Cardiff:

Daniel Jones Head 38 St Athan, Glamorgan Coal Foreman
M J Jones Wife 43 Cardiff, Glamorgan
Joseph Jones Son 23 Cardiff, Glamorgan Coal Foreman
Lillian Jones Daugh 9 Cardiff, Glamorgan
Elsie Jones Daugh 7 Cardiff, Glamorgan
Reginald Jones Son 3 Cardiff, Glamorgan
Charlotte Morse Boarder 70 Gileston, Glamorgan

Joseph Jones is Mary's son from a previous marriage and Charlotte Morse
is their grandmother.

Take care,
Paul

Wow, Marcus, this is incredible - thank you so much.

I had previously thought that James was married to a Sylvia Priscilla BRYANT but the marriage date was in the year after Isaac's birth (possible, of course) but this James BIRD & Ann ILES were married a little under 2 years before Isaac's birth which makes it sligthly more likely. Sylvia Priscilla would also be the only occurance of the names Sylvia & Priscilla in that branch of my family which is littered with the name Ann. It definitely needs more work!

This is almost certainly my Isaac - his age, location and profession are bang on. The other Isaac and William are defiitely  his children - I know that Isaac Jnr was a grocer and William a market gardener. I don't know about John though Mary might be a relative.

The burials look good too.  Samuel, particularly is the right age and worth a visit to the Mangotsfield graveyard. Thomas should have been 39 on 2 Nov 1845, but he was in his 40th year and would have been 40 in a couple of months so it could be him. This Thomas will be in the 1841 census so I'll trawl around for that. Shame that Samuel died so young - Thomas too.

They were all Methodists which makes it more difficult, but their marriages should show up in parish records.

Thanks for all your efforts. You've been amazingly helpful.

Take care,
Paul

I found an old railway called the Avon Valley Railway, which goes from Bath to Bristol:
http://www.avonvalleyrailway.co.uk/history.asp

This is a fantastic site, Marcus, thanks. I see that it's built too late for James BIRD to have worked on it and so the family rumour must be false. However it goes through all the places that my ancestors came from Mangotsfield, Bitton, Oldland Common ... It must have made such a difference to people's lives and opened up vast tracts of the country that were previously isolated.

Take care,
Paul
