Thanks for the reply.  I am really struggling to find information on my McMahon relatives from the Carnaross area.  I know my GG Grandfather Patrick was born in 1833 and up until recently, I thought he had two brothers, Hugh and Anthony.  I have since found out he had a sister Mary, looks like she was born at some point between 1838  and 1841.  I am hoping to update my family tree over the next few weeks so will let you know what I find.

Hi

I think that there is a strong possibility that there is a link.  Owen Edward Owens was a clock maker from Amlwch in Anglesey.  He died in March 1857.  There does appear to be  a family link to Garston in Liverpool.  In fact Owen Edward's son Owen William Owens, who was my husbands great grandfather eventually settled in Garston.  We have been able to locate most of the baptisms of Owen Edward Owens children in the Amlwch Parish Register.  The one that I have still to locate is that of Owen William Owens who was born in August 1850.  If the family where living in Garston rather than Amlwch at that time, it may explain the absence of the entry.

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help with my search.  I have just spoken to an aunt who informed me that Terence Mackin, born in 1857 was the son of a Mary Connolly.  Terence was a seaman, occupation listed as stoker.  Any ideas where I can  find any further  information on this family?  The family home was listed as Mackins Farm, Mackins Hill in Cullyhanna, but it appears that there were several Mackins families all living in this location in the late 1800's and early 1900's.  I seem to keep hitting a brick wall, any help much appreciated. Picture is of Maggie Mackin, born in 1891

Hi

Does anyone have any knowledge of the McMahon family from Carnaross in County Meath?  My gg Grandfather was Patrick McMahon, born in Carnaross in 1833.  I believe he had an older brother, Hugh born in 1831 and a younger brother Anthony born in 1837.  Their mother was Rose, not sure of her maiden name.  I have been unable to find out the first name of Patrick's father, I believe he died round the time of the potato famine.

Hi

This seems to be getting more confusing by the day.  Unfortunately, I cannot say if James had any brothers or sisters, I did ask my aunt earlier but she was unable to help.  My aunt seems to be under the impression that there was some truth in the story about James being illegitimate.  She told me that many stories were circulated and one of the stories in particular was that James's mother was unable to look after him and he was brought up by the church. She is also convinced that he took his mothers surname (Howard) I do remember my grandfather, Fred Howard talking about the Partington area.  Just wondering, if a young girl had a child and was unable to cope for whatever reason, would the church become involved?

Hi

I have just spoken to my aunt to see if she could provide any further information.  She has but it has really confused me.  She told me that her grandfather, James Howard, was definitely born in Partington in 1847 but the family were always told that he was illegitimate.  She went on to explain that this story was circulated to the family in the 1940's but no-one had ever been able to find out if it was true.  One theory was that James actually took his mothers maiden name, but again this has never been proven.  I explained that I have received a copy of his marraige certificate which gives his father's name as Joseph Howard.  My aunt does not believe that James's father was Joseph Howard.  Help!!  Where do I go from here?  My aunt is in her 90's and doesn't seem to remember any other information.

Hi

Thanks for the information about Christina's first marriage.  You mention that William Haslam took James Howards surname, I noticed in a later census that William had reverted back to using the surname Haslam.
The marriage of James Howard to Christina took place on 13th July 1874 in the Parish Church, Liverpool.  The witnesses are listed as Emma Roberts Metcalf and Frederic Wurst.  James Howard's occupation is shown as a Carter and his father Joseph Howard's occupation is listed as the same.  Christina is shown as Christina E Haslam

Hi

Yes, you are right, Christina had been married before she married James Howard.  When I first started researching my Howard relatives, I thought that James was the son of William and Mary but then I received the marriage certificate which has totally confused me.  I suppose it could be possible that James did lose his father at an early age.  I seem to recall a story back in the 1970's that his mother was not married when he was born but no-one has been able to confirm this.  Any thoughts or information you have would be greatfully received.
Thanks

Hi

Thanks for the reply.  Up until a couple of weeks ago I hadn't been able to identify the name of James's father.  I received James and Christina's marriage certificate last week and it gives his father as Joseph Howard.  I do seem to recall many years ago, my mother telling me that my grandfathers family were from Partington, the only reason I mention Disley/Poynton was because one of the census records showed these areas.  I have just rechecked 3 census records, 1881, states he was born in Manchester, 1891 and 1901 both state he was born in Partington.  Any help much appreciated
