Thanks Dawn, I did telephone Bristol first and it did save me a trip. I have sent for some certificates and, also now having seen the marriage certificate I can see where the confusion has come in. The V in Vowles could be mistaken for a P. So thank you to everyone who has helped.

First I would like to thank Dawn, I have decided to visit Bristol Records Office on Friday, I live just across the bridge in Newport. Also thanks to Daisy I think you are probably right about the spelling mistake on the marriage certificate. Doris was born in Newport in 1909, her maiden name was Allison. I now feel as if I'm beginning to get somewhere. Under the spelling of Powles Doris seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth after her marriage, but under the name of Vowles I believe I've found her again. When I return from the records office on Friday I will let you know how I got on. Many thanks, June

Thank you to everybody who has been helping me to try and find Robert Henry Powles/Doris Lillian Allison. Today I was looking on the Free BMD for some of my other Allison family and I found a birth for a Robert H Vowles whose mother's maiden name was Allison born in Bristol in 1932. This got me thinking that perhaps at one time or another there may have been a mis-spelling of a transcript. can anyone help by checking this out for me, I can't get to the library until at least next Monday. Thanks June

Doris was born in July 1909, on the 1911 Census she was 2 years of age. At the time of their marriage they were both 22 years of age. They were living in  Southmead Road, Bristol, he was at 374 and Doris was at 266. His profession is down as a laborer. The birth in 1907 in Norfolk of a Robert Powles does seem plausible. I've not looked for any children they might have had under Doris's maiden name and I've not looked in the 1911 Census for Robert. I'm not sure if the Death in Hertfordshire of a Doris Lillian Powles is her the age difference for the date of birth is quite large. I have not found a death registration for either  Doris or Robert, I did wonder if they went abroad, but I have found no record of them leaving the country, but perhaps I've not looked long enough. I do appreciate all the help as I'm really quite a beginner. I'm really interested in Doris but I thought it would be easier to trace her under her married name.

I'm looking for Robert Henry Powles, father William Powles, I have no idea where they came from. Robert henry Powles married Doris Lillian Allison in 1931 in Bristol, vol 6a page255. I am trying to find out what happened to the couple after their marriage. Is there anyone who can perhaps shed some light on my mystery. Doris was born in Newport, monmouthshire in 1909 vol 11a page 274. Thanks.
