Ireland / Re: Protestant/Catholic insight please
« on: Saturday 24 June 17 23:43 BST (UK)  »

I know about the other groups, not just Catholic but any group deemed dissenting. My bunch are mostly Presbyterian so they'd be included. But I haven't seen any evidence of discrimination against them because I can't trace any of them back very far. Not enough records...but, you already knew that  :)

Up to the 19th Century many of the people whom had left ireland were Presbyterians whom the established church were not in favour of.
It is why Washington had many men from an irish background who were not Catholic during War of Independence in the 1770's.
They opposed the Crown and the United Irishmen were founded by members of the non extablised churches

I do hope when they put the corrections on that they put the original details that were corrected there as well.

https://buried.fingal.ie/

A useful site from Fingal County Council that cover North County Dublin and area stretching out to West Dublin.

It is more for deaths in 20th Century and 21st Century and reasonable on records.

There was a recent report done and published with the involvement of Charlie Weston who is a journalist for Irish Independent. Charlie has pure 1916 heritage in Fingal.

This looked at poverty and deprivation in 1916 and even Researcher said she was moved to tears reading the accounts.

I am aware of how poor my own grandparents / great grandparents were, some through demon drink it has to be said.

I kept hearing on RTE at weekend about how so many of the men were teachers and writers and poets, to me that is condescending as overwhelming majority were nothing of the kind.

Hi, Did you mean Dan Brophy? If so, Dan Brophy was my grandfather :)

Was this Colonel Dan Brophy per chance some of whose family emigrated to the US ?

Yes his youngest daughter Aideen also emigrated to US

Hello

I was talking of Paddy who was his son by Jane, his first wife who died young, Paddy emigrated to the US and passed away a couple of years ago.

Paddy was married to a Hanratty who are related to me on my Dad's side and Jane his first wife was a sister of Paddy Doyle who was out with him in 1916 and is a distant relative on my mums side.

Dan of course was one of the 20 men that Tomas Ashe sent to the GPO on Easter Tuesday.

Dan married a Golden who may be a sister of another of the 1916 men from Lusk.

I was speaking with some members of Black Raven Pipe Band who remember Dan Brophy as he was a distant relative.

This recently published book is a fascinating look at Primary School Education in Lusk Co, Dublin over a period of 170 years up to the early 1990's.

It contains register of pupils from when a register was first taken in late 19th Century to late 20th century.

I found it both a fascinating read and a great resource both for now and and the future.

I have a great many relatives originating in Lusk over the centurys and this is great, plus provides me with some photos I never knew existed.

I have been told that there is a small graveyard down The Burrow which I was unaware of.

I will have a look into it in next couple of months and no idea who was ever buried there but has been unused for many years.

Spoke to my mum and she has indicated that records of everybody that was buried in St Ita's Graveyard in Portrane are still held within Portrane Hospital.

Wonder what the rules are for making them available.
