New Zealand Resources & Offers / OFFER: Waikumete Cemetery Photos (Auckland)
« on: Friday 25 September 20 02:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I am back again, with oodles of time on my hands for genealogy now, thanks to some random event which seems to be happening world-wide.  ??? :P

I am intending to visit Waikumete Cemetery hopefully next week, if not, the week after, so thought I would put out an offer for anyone looking for photos. Give me a bell here, or make a request on Find A Grave, and I will do my very best to find and photograph the graves for you.

Please give as much detail as possible! Waikumete is a very large cemetery to walk through, so any information to make finding the graves as easy as possible is appreciated.

Cheers!

Georgia

I've just met my Dad's cousin for the first time this week, and he told me he knew about Angus running off from his family. Apparently one of Angus' grand-daughters has written a wee booklet about her memories, and Angus features in that. So, I am waiting to get a copy and have a look through it. :-)

'Tis indeed a verra Scottish name. He was born in 1853 in Nova Scotia, though. His parents are Kenneth McLeod and Ann McDonald, taken from his marriage certificate. I don't know any details about them as of yet. Perhaps they did leave the highlands during the clearances.

I recall looking awhile ago at a ships roll with a Kenneth McLeod in Whangarei, and I think there was a young Angus mentioned on it. Don't quote me, though!

I do have his death certificate, which mentions that he was born in Canada, but I can't find it at present, and BDM won't re-issue it to me via email. :( I will have a hunt through my records again for it this weekend.

Oh, thank you very much! :-)  Yes, he is definitely my great-great grandfather.

I just looked up the newspaper on PP, I see the marriage! The Rev. Gardener is actually my grandmother's grandfather. :-) Small world!

I'm going to visit my Dad in hospital tomorrow, so it will be nice to mention these wee tidbits. :-)

I shall PM you my email address.

I wonder how he wound up in the BOP, and then on to Auckland. I will ask my Dad tomorrow if he recalls his grandmother mentioning any family rifts.  How interesting!

I may go and have a look again at Waikumete on Monday or Tuesday, see what I can find this time. :-)

I shall have to go and have another look! It would be nice to have somewhere to pay my respects.

Interesting about the electoral roll, RK, I haven't got a worldwide sub to Ancestry this year, so can't look at them (*), I hadn't heard about an estrangement; Angus' daughter, Annie, tried very hard to get my grandmother to call my Dad Angus, so she must have got on with him.  ;D

New Zealand Completed Requests / McLeod - Waikumete Cemetery Headstone Lookup

Hallo all!

It has been a wee while.

I have been to Waikumete Cemetery half a dozen times now, searching for my Great, great grandfather Angus Kenneth McLeod, who is supposedly buried there. Alas, I have not managed to find his gravestone, even with council records giving me a location (Plot: Anglican Division E Row 7, Plot 87).

I have wondered for a few years now why he was in Auckland at all, when the entirety of his family were sensibly together down in Woodville.

Here's the link to the find-a-grave listing I created for him a few years ago:

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=85661348

Birth:    1853
Nova Scotia, Canada
Death:    Aug. 30, 1918
Auckland, New Zealand

He married in Kumeroa (so again, nowhere near Auckland!), and as mentioned above, his entire family stayed down the southern end of the North Island. His wife died in 1924, and is buried in Woodville. So, why was he up here, and why is he buried alone?

If someone manages to find him, or can point me in the right direction on a map (we got a bit confused as to what rows were what the last couple of times we went), I should be most grateful!

Cheery  :D

How fabulous! I also note one of your research interests in Scotland is the name Mason, of which my OH is descended from. Not 100% familiar with his family yet, but could be a link or two there.  :)

I look forward to hearing from you.  :)

Cheery!

Hi Jaybel
Happy New Year (almost!) to you, too!

That is a pity! However, I was rather busy with two jobs in August and I just had zero time to devote to genealogy. I am still working the two jobs, but have a wee bit of a holiday and so will make sure I make time for this. Especially now as I have possibly found a set of parents + siblings. Exciting!

Ideally, I would visit myself. However, I don't think it will be realistic in 2016. If that person who won the $15m would like to share, though, I'd go in a heartbeat! ;)

Thank you for the thought, it's no great rush. It's just to have a photo, to be able to see something of my ancestors. In the mean time, I shall keep trying to dig up more information. I'm contemplating a visit to the Auckland City Library, as it appears they have a few resources on Ayrshire.

Actually, while I think of it, do any of those photos contain Purdie's or Campbell's? They aren't direct ancestors of mine, but I suspect a couple of Purdie's I have met here are related to them, and thus, distantly to me. Just a cheeky Q. Thanks :-)
