Thats the same Peter Heaton that is in my tree. Thanks for the info.

As regards the children of John Heaton, what would be the easiest way to trace their children? I do know some, but by no means all. As far as I am aware, they have all passed away bar one.

A little update on this. From the information given, I have been able to trace that Lawrence was one of a total of 14 children born to John and Sarah Ann. Six of these died early, which of course left eight. Of these, one spouse is confirmed. I have probables to five of the others. The remaining two seem to have disappeared from radar....!

A couple of interesting things there. In the 1871 census is Sarah, aged 10. Which would give an approx. birth date of 1861. Earlier we have a Sarah Ann, shown on the 1901 census as being 34, which would give an approx birth date as 1867.

I'm not sure I can understand this. Are these two sisters or a generation apart?

Especially the 1871 census results has given me quite a bit to chew on. I'm assuming that Peter Heaton died somewhere between 1861 and 1871. Others seem to have disappeared also. A mining accident perhaps, given the area?

Trish, first of all, thanks ever so for your help.

I have a birth certificate for Lawrence Heaton, and it shows him to have been born at 83 Oldfield Street. His father is shown as John Heaton, and mother as Sarah Ann Heaton, formerly Thompson.

It seems as though this is the correct one, but as you say, it all needs confirming.

I'm having difficulty finding information about a Lawrence Heaton, born abt. 1893 in Prescot, St Helens. If its possible, could someone check him out for me, please? I'm looking especially for siblings, parents, grandparents, but anything that would help.

I'm sorry, but I dont have the exact dates of the accident.

Probably, your best bet will be to call the coroners office, and ask where inquest records for those mines are kept.

Some of the mines in that area were owned by Richard Evans & Co., which was a Wigan company.

Both Wigan and St. Helens have good message boards/forums. Asking on those will probably obtain you some more information.

I might just be able to help on this question.

As others have said, he probably lived withing walking distance of the mine. As you give the address as Sutton, then there are at least 4 mines withing walking distance. I know for a fact that at one of them (Sutton Manor) three people were killed in 1915 alone. That one was a "bad" pit (if any can be called otherwise!) and there was a fatal accident almost every year!

The good news is that there was always an inquest held into a death, normally at St. Helens Town Hall. Therefore, records will exist.

Incidentally, a mining disaster is only when 10 or more are killed. Otherwise its an accident. It always makes me think that miners lives weren't worth much.

Shropshire / Re: Baughs in Dawley area
« on: Monday 25 July 11 13:15 BST (UK)  »
I have a Beriah born in Dawley in 1827 that married a Sarah Ann Bailey. His father was also Beriah, b. 1794, again in Dawley. His mother was a Barbara ? b.1773. Her father was Richard Baugh, b.1743, who married an Ann Teece. Richards father was William, b. c.1698, but as yet unconfirmed.

Any help?
