Hi Daisy

Thank you for your email. I am of the opinion thatwhat my grandmother told my late father was not the complete story regarding his own father and the circumstances relating to his death. I would like to obtain a death certificate, but am not sure how to, or who exactly to contact.

Korki

Don't always believe family stories, I know from experience that they are not always true, Maybe your Grandmother told this to your father for reasons as yet undiscovered.

Regards,
Daisy

William Robert married his wife Florence May Andrews in 1908. On 12 June 1916 Florence gave birth to twins. Six months later on 18 December 1916 William Robert was dead.
My late father: John Andrew Courtney always alleged that his father: William Robert was killed  (drowned) as a result of a single torpedo fired from a German u-boat sinking the ship he was serving upon. The HMS Armadale after being fitted out with guns saw little enemy action during the First World War. She was never sunk and in fact was brought back into normal service following the First World War.
I would like to know why these 7 war casualties have been singled out and their names appear on the same memorial plaque. What is the association one with the other? I have been in contact with both the Rake Lane Cemetery and the Friends of Rake Lane Cemetery, but to date have not been provided with an answer. I should imagine that any living relatives of the above war casualties would also like to be provided with the self same answer. If any one can provide me with a satisfactory explanation, it would be much appreciated.

My questions concerns my grandfather: William robert Courtney.

William Robert Courtney served as a greaser on the HMS Armadale (castle line) during world War I. He married in 1908. His wife Florence May gave birth to twins on June 12 1916. Six months later on 18 December 1916 William Robert was dead. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission his death was the result of drowning. However, the ship he served on saw little enemy action and was never sunk. I had been informed by my late father: John Andrew Courtney, that his father: William Robert died when the ship he was on was sunk by a single torpedo fired  by a German u-boat.  If that is true, then the ship could not of been HMS Armadale.

Why however, do these 7 names appear on this memorial plaque? They are all unrelated casualties. So what is their connection?

If you have information, please contact.
