Hi Suzy.

Thanks for the contact. My grandfather was James David Henry Barry, brother to your grandfather.

I had a brother named Kevin, born 1959, died 2010.

Thank you for that info.

There are 8 people listed with the surname of Barry. All appear at different addresses. I'am not sure how big Ballydehob is so I can't say if that a lot or not.

I'll write some letters as you suggest and see how I go.

Regards
Colin

These are all my previous threads.

At  the time the only evidence I could find on  a David Barry and Sarah Barry was Lancashire England and Richard James Barry London/Middlesex.

Records from Schull/Skull appeared on the net after those threads were forwarded to rootschat.com. Please disregard my threads relating to England.

Cork / Barry Family

My gg grand father ( Richard James Barry) was born in Ballydehob, Schull/Skull in SW Cork abt 1840.  R.J.'s  parents were David Barry and Sarah Roberts. I believe he had 3 sisters and 1 brother that I know off, Mary 1838, Julia 1842, Margaret 1844 and David 1846.

David may have been born around 1815 and married Sarah 1836. Sarah may have been born abt 1810. Both in Schull/Skull

R.J. migrated to Australia sometime in the 1860's.

I would be interested to know if any Barry's, or descendants still live in the area. Or alternatively what happened.

Hi Shane

Their denomination was RC.

I have been able to obtain a large amount of information, apart from actual dates of birth and any family connection going back from David Barry and Sarah Roberts.

What I would like to know is there any Barry's still living in the area and would they be prepered to talk to a distant Australian relative.

Regards,
Colin Barry

Hi

I was not sure what you did, however I was referring to transcribing church records to those on line. So I apologise for any misunderstanding.

I knew some records for Cork were coming out in October. I did not know they were the last, I do now.

I will try these other avenues.

Regards
Colin

The word "transcribed" was used in the context of transcribing hard copy church records to a data base accessable by the net. I guess it's what you do.

A previous reply from Rootschat.com, I believe his name was George, stated that Cork, particularly the SW region is the last area of Ireland to be transcribed. I interpreted this to mean more records were to come. In all fairness George did say he was not familiar with the county of Cork.

It is sad that records may be lost due to bad record keeping by the church. Maybe they weren't aware what was going to happen 100 years down the track.

My brother has a silver fork and spoon with what I believe is the crest of the Earl of Barrymore on the handle of each. Secondly George (I think) said Richard James and David were not all that common a name (in Ireland). A search of a web page on the Earl of Barrymore, and preceding Viscounts and Barons show the christian names of '"David", "Richard" and "James" appearing quite a bit.

I believe there is a connection, just when and where.

Another issue is when and on what ship did Richard James arrive in Queensland Australia. I believe it was around 1860/1863.  RJ married an Irish girl from Belfast (Alice Mary Murphy). She arrived in Australia with her family around the same time. Was it on the same ship. I was told by the Queensland archives that records around that time were destroyed by flood and as such unable to locate a passenger list from this end. any help would be greatfull.

Thank you for those 2 sites. I will look at both and see if I can come up with anything. We also propose to travel to Ireland in May/June next year and may visit the area. My wife has relatives in Northern Ireland. I been told Skull is 4/5 hours away.

Thank you for that info.

I looked on that site and have family names. I know his parents are David Barry (1815) and Sarah Roberts (1810).

I have some info from other family that David's father was also called David, confusing. I have a David (1785) married to a Bridget Henessy (no date).

I am told that Cork, particularly SE Cork is one of the last areas to be transcribed. So I guess it's a waiting game.

Further to my previous post I have found other Barry's from Ballydehob born about the same time and still residing there in 1901/1911

Richard James was born abt 1840/1841

Bridget Barry born abt 1851

John Barry born abt 1853

John married Maria (don't have her maiden name) and had 10 or more children, the eldest John born about 1885 and the youngest Daniel born about 1897.

This may be of help.
