thanks folks - I'll have a look.

Speaking offline, is it the county libraries that maintain original or paper based records, if any ?

Australia / Re: Old Newspaper Resources

thanks everyone - there are some great resources here.

I need to track the voyages of my 2 ship's captain ancestors - they were in the british merchant navy during the period mentioned - i already have tonnes of stuff on them so will consult the ones mentioned here to see have any slipped my research.  I'm writing a book on one of them actually based on his painstakingly dictated autobiography, which has survived in the family since the 20s.

thank you all very much

G'Day Aussies

I'm looking for ideas and sources to search for ship comings and goings to Australian ports between 1860-1900 - I am aware of http://trove.nla.gov.au/ and have had some success there.

Just wondering are there any other digitised records available that I may have missed.

Ireland / Seaman's Certificates

Not sure what forum this one belongs in so apologies.

I've gotten ahold of a number of certificates for a merchant navy ancestor which shows his progression up the ranks from mate to master.  However there are 2 certificates for him, 3 years apart, for the same rank of First Mate.  My question is could a certificate be taken from you or could you be "demoted" in rank (and hence lose a certificate) if something happened  ?

any idea where I could find more about certificates from the board of trade ?

would any of the above be related to you.

No - afraid not debu - I did check the RootsIreland indexes though as some returns for Duncannon (my hometown) are in the parish of St.James & Templetown, but found nothing.

Have you tried Griffiths Valuation of 1854 to establish the family in the area ?
