Wiltshire Lookup Requests / James SHELL and Lucy SHEWRING, born about 1755
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyonehelp me find the births, parents and siblings of James and Lucy?

James and Lucy married in 1779 in Corsham - she being ofthe parish, he being a dweller in the parish.  They had 14 children in Box, the last one being born in 1805.

I’m not 100% sure of James and Lucy’s deaths, but IF they are the couple who were buried on the same day in Feb 1837 in Badwick (bathwick?), Box, she would have had her eldest child when she was 51 ... which seems rather old.  It would also mean that she was born in 1754 and he in 1757.  Can anyone help me find their parents and any siblings?

If it helps, their children’s names were Isaac, Mary Ann, Catherine, Jacob, William, William (again) Lucy, Maria, James, Rose Hannah, Isaac (again), Samuel, George Gullick, John. (Some children died, hence having multiple children given the same name).

I also can’t find what happened to Maria b1794, James b1796 and Rose Hannah  b1797, although James was in the British Army in Canada when he was 16.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your efforts.  Greatly appreciated!!  I checked out the marriages but from what I can find none of the potential wives were born at the right place.  Good tip about the quakers and catholics, and knowing that there’s nothing extra at the archives for B’ham than what is online.  I’ve checked out what wills I can but none are quite right.

Thank you again!!

Hi Jim1
Thanks for trying.  Were you looking online or at records in the records office?

Warwickshire / Pemberton family in Birmingham early 1830s

I’m having trouble finding the father of Pemberton children born in Birmingham.  The mum was called Sarah (maiden name not known, born abr 1792 (Bolas, Newport?) Shropshire).

We know of 3 daughters, but cant find their birth records (and dont know if they have siblings)

-  Hannah Maria b 1817 Birmingham m Marmaduke William Osborne in Birmingham 1839. I’m hoping someone is happy to look through records and find the marriage details for info on her dad.  I dont know which church they were married at. The details are not on ancestry.

- Rebecca b 1824 m Edgebaston, Warwickshire AND Kings Norton, Worcester 1853. The Edgbaston record has the fathers details missing but maybe someone can look them up in Kings Norton Register?

- Sarah Louisa - born 1830 (not married)

We only know of their existence through census details.

Any help gratefully received :)

Hi
Would anyone be willing to check whether there are any death records (between 1806 and 1828) in the above parish under the name of Bowen.  I understand that one of our ancestors died there in 1828, but he may have had wife and children who lived there too.  His name is Tamerlane Bowen and he would have been 91 if he died in 1828.
We also know that one of his wives was called Elizabeth but have no marriage for them.  Tamerlane could have married any time between 1755 and 1778 ... having babies in Nevern, Pembrokeshire until 1806!! (Perhaps he married more than one woman called Elizabeth).
Any help greatly appreciated.

Wow! Yes, perhaps James and William were registered as Walters instead of Valters. We have requested Thomas's birth reg so hopefully that one will be found.

We have also been using Sophia's maiden name to find the birth registrations but perhaps she gave her married name instead.

Ellen and Robert were two of the birth certificates my sister has requested (but which couldn't be found) as well as William (born and died 1839 in London)(certificate found and with the father's name on, so we assume he was alive then).

Pity the 1851 census for Takely and Dunmow are missing. That might have given some clues too.

Yes jonw65, it is indeed Sophia Valters. Being a relatively wealthy woman with many siblings around, I doubt that tiredness was the reason she didn't register these births.

Her husband, (whose death we can't find) was, we think, the servant to a wealthy family from Northmaptonshire who spent the summer season in London (with servants following them). We were wondering if her husband died and she became the lover of rich person who could bend birth registration rules. But as such registration wasn't compulsory, then no rules were bent.

Hadn't thought of looking for Roberts death record (although she didn't register his birth).  Perhaps she couldn't get away with not registering that, but would it have the fathers name on?

Good to know about the date registration became compulsory. As she did register one child (with her husband, when we assume he was alive) I reckon she just didn't bother to register the subsequent children to avoid answering difficult questions.

If anyone has any tips on how we can search further, it would be good to know.
