Hi Judith,

Really glad to hear from you, I haven't done much research for a while due to so family matters but am trying to get back to it now.

Currently on maternity leave and waiting on my little one to arrive so perfect time to try and catch up.

I had a feeling that one of the shops would have been demolished but very interesting that one is still there 😀

If you are willing to share the photo you have this would be brilliant, unfortunately no photos from that side of the family seemed to have survived or were ever passed onto my mum or nan.

Would love to keep in touch and see if there is any info that we can swap, I'm expecting little one any day now ( was actually due today but she's late ) but I'll keep an eye on my email for any responses.

Hi Paul,

I believe that you are right when you say we share the same ggg grandfather, I've done some research on George French (Elizabeth's brother) .... he had a really interesting life.  Also I have researched Elizabeth's 2 sisters Selina and Emma. (Emma being my gg grandmother).

I'd be happy to share the information I have :)

Michelle

Hello Michelle,
Think that my ggg grandfather was also George French, Baker of Barnstaple.  I am descended from Elizabeth Jane French, his eldest daughter, who moved to London to work as a cook at the Royal Free Hospital.  She married James Withers and they had a daughter, Amelia, who then gave birth to my grandfather, Joseph Webb.

Did you get very far with your research?

Thats great news, was wondering what I was going to do watch later, I didn't even know it was on either, just shows how much notice I take of the TV listings.

The Lighter Side / Re: Names which cause problems with searches....

I always have issues with the surname Key especially when I haven't got a first name to go with it.  If I google search for 'Key family staffordshire' i get lots of hits for Key family history collections within staffordshire which would be great if it was a collection about the Key family but it isnt  :(

The do have 1 surname that is funny to search and thats 'Bullock' if I search the British newspaper Archives for the surname I get lots of results for articles regarding bulls for sale lol  ;)

I think i went overborad with my organisation when I first started researching but maybe thats a good thing.  I keep both an electronic copy and a paper copy of everything and use the same filing system for both.

I have split my generations up into books, book1 is my mum and dad, book 2 is my grandparents on my mums side, book 3 and 4 is my grandparents parents and so on (I'm only doing my mums side and my aunt has already done my dads ancestry).

Each book contains a cover page for each person wirth there own unique reference number giving there basic BMD details, a photo, parents names etc i also keep notes there on what i still need to research.  I then have a second sheet for them which is a timeline of there lives, listing occupations, residences etc.  Each of the entries on the timeline has a reference number for the document that holds the information which corrisponds to one of 3 folders I have holding my BMD certificates / Census returns / Parish records and other documents.

I find that whover I look at I can instantly see what book and sheet i should look at to see there parents, and where to find there certificates.  All this is stored in another 2 ring binders at the moment, I can get about 5 books per ring binder.

All the same info i kept electronically as well, when i get a certificate or any paper document I scan it and name it with the same ref number thats on the paper copy, that way i can swap between looking at the paper trail and the documents on my laptop at any time.  it also makes it so easy to update.

As for using Ancestry, i have 2 tree's the first is massive and goes back through alot of generations, i have to admit it's not all 100% proven yet but I'll get there.  the second tree is private and only gets added to when I have definate proof of something.

I think maybe I'm really obsessed with the organising side of things  :) but when it comes to family research I think good organisation is key.

Good Luck with your own organising

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: 3 Photos but are they of the same family
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi JamJar,

Yes B and C are of the same day.

I posted these same photo's a while ago to see if anyone could help identify the uniform and date the photo's.  Someone came back with a date around 1942 and suggested it may be a wartime wedding.

The child that is with the couple in photo C is possibly a niece/nephew rather than the couples own child, depending on how far apart the pictures were taken it could be the same child that is pictured in picture A, the child is the daughter of Elsie.

Thanks for the responses, I'm glad that it wasn't just me seeing resemblances that weren't there  :)

I also thought that the dress Joyce is wearing in both photo's looked remarkably alike, they could be the same dress.  I'm sure the photo's are taken a few years apart so if it is the same dress then she must have saved it.

As for Margaret marrying a Harold, thats something I don't know at the moment as not much is known about her.  There was a family rumour that she ran away at a young age but if this is the case then she must have come back at some point.

I wonder if anyone would hazard a guess as to how many years there are between photo's A and B,C.

Again many thanks for the responses, keep them coming.
