Found this map, will proceed to ruin my eyesight:

Also a big document dump here for the next time I'm down south:

Thanks for looking into it.

Found a few more references in FreeReg so must have been a reasonable settlement at some point. Shame no one has used it to name  their AirBNB cottage, it's helped me find a few other places.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Grissel Roy and Robertson married at 15

Not sure if this thread is too necroed but I'm also interested in Grace (recorded variously as Grizel and Grisel). Born Roy, in Knockando most probably, but we'll probably never know due to that fire.

Written account of her by her grandson is attached. [edit - too big to post, shared link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5UInjw2xobeZVlZcTk5d3VPWlE/view?usp=sharing]

Married first husband John Robertson 25/10/1783 of Forress and had three or four children by him (James, Alexander, Isobel, Thomas).

Frequent witnesses at baptisms are Alexander Roy, Isobel Roy and Alexander Christie - perhaps parents?

Husband dies and she has a second husband, reputedly her cousin, Alexander. I can't find a marriage record.

She has two sons by Alexander. (Alexander and James) (He's said to come from Boharm, but can't establish a birth record that looks likely).

She's buried in Drumblade churchyard, 24 Nov 1833, stone 290 with second husband Alexander. . Son Alexander is buried next door in 289 with most of his family, while son James emigrated to NZ.

Burial stone record here: http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php

Keen to hear if anyone establishes parents for Grace and Alexander bearing in mind that they are cousins.

Yes it's unclear to me too why people would trek that far afield from the local parish church. The spelling 'Shenlachie' in the register and 'Shenachie' the place name may not be interchangeable (the word's origin is slightly ironic too... (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seancha%C3%AD https://www.scottishfield.co.uk/culture/the-story-of-the-scots-storytellers-the-shennachies/ ).

My current thinking is that there is a another place Shenlachie in Mortlach. Either that or there's an interesting historical reason to make the journey. It could be somehow referring to a Gaelic meaning of the word which seems unlikely.

I attach images of three Mortlach parish registers below citing Shenlachie from parents William Roy and Jane Robertson:
* George Roy: 1 May 1 1749
* John Roy:
* Peter Roy: 6 Jan 1751

 I think there are likely to be more because Shenlachie is cited in Mortlach in other genealogies, eg https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Family:James_Mitchell_and_Isobel_Baillie_(1).

The place called Shenachie may have been better known as Pollochaig in the past:

Banffshire / Shenlachie in Mortlach

Hi all

I've tracked some c18th births in Mortlach recorded at 'Shenlachie' but the only reference to this I've found is on the banks of the Findhorn ('Shenachie') further south west. ( Could also be me doing a bad job superimposing the parish maps onto OS Landranger).

Anyone know where this might be in Mortlach?

Cheers/Max

Thanks all. Foudland seems attested to by another source!

Apologies for not posting in the handwriting section.

The forum wouldn't let me post the file in the current resolution, which is why I chose to provide a link. A lower res file would be harder to read which would defeat the purpose of the exercise.

Hi there

Can anyone help please me decipher the attached full text of this entry for Alexander Roy, birth recorded 22/04/1798? It's an Insch birth, but I believe the text mentions more details about the place.

22/04/1798 ROY, ALEXANDER (Old Parish Registers Births 203/ 10 316 Insch) Page 316 of 417

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AHlVkd3GRqHrMIljwuj9Fp1JawCjowGW/view?usp=sharing

If it's the right entry, it's also a semi-out of wedlock birth to a Grace Roy, who was a cousin (apparently) to father Alexander Roy. Grace was the widower of a John Robertson, and then marries Alex Roy in 1800.

Cheers/Max

Moray (Elginshire) / Alexander Roy, Grace Roy, Moray/Banff or further afar
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 23:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, wondering if anyone can please help with this one?

Looking for the parents of Alexander Roy born in 1763 apparently in the parish of Boharm. Died Drumblade, Huntly, Aberdeenshire Dec 31 1830 Kirkyard of Drumblade (AA125), Stone 290.

I couldn't find any records from Boham/Banff, but there is a birth of an Alexander Roy in 1763 recorded up the road in Mortlach to parents William Roy and Jane Robertson - can anyone find a better match?

Also looking for more information on Alexander Roy's wife: Grace born c1760, died 1833, also buried Drumblade.

Alexander married Grace in Insch in 1800 although Grace apparently married a Robertson (first name unknown before that).

Phew, thanks!
