Many thanks for all of that - fascinating stuff.
If they were that well off then, it seems to have disappeared before it could reach me!!
On my paternal side someone has managed to trace a direct line back to the 1400s - generations of farm labourers, then in 1750s a couple went up a rung to become "ploughmen", then a couple of blacksmiths, then "blacksmith/gunsmith" - at which point enough money for my g.g.g.grandfather to leave rural Oxfordshire for London and start a pretty successful brewery. (His son sold it but family lore has it that his partner absconded with the proceeds - another loss to my inheritance!)
But it does show social mobility (as the politicians call it) working over several generations.

PS I am rather tempted to use freedom of information legislation and ask Princess Anne to tell my why one of her predecessors gave the old girl an annuity.
