Hi Robin
Many thanks for all of that - fascinating stuff.
If they were that well off then, it seems to have disappeared before it could reach me!!
On my paternal side someone has managed to trace a direct line back to the 1400s - generations of farm labourers, then in 1750s a couple went up a rung to become  "ploughmen", then a couple of blacksmiths, then "blacksmith/gunsmith" - at which point enough money for my g.g.g.grandfather to leave rural Oxfordshire for London and start a pretty successful brewery. (His son sold it but family lore has it that his partner absconded with the proceeds - another loss to my inheritance!)
But it does show social mobility (as the politicians call it) working over several generations.

Best of luck with the rest of your research.

PS I am rather tempted to use freedom of information legislation and ask Princess Anne to tell my why one of her predecessors gave the old girl an annuity.

Dear Robin
Many thanks for your reply.
What I loved about the mystery lady was the person who came and gave her money on a regular basis - a wonderful chap called the "Royal Goldstick in Waiting" - apparently the person responsible for the monarch's personal safety - and a post which lasts to this day, but shared by a couple of honorary colonels (Princess Anne is one).
Elsewhere descendants have tried to prove that the Bevirs were illegitimate children of George IV (when Prince Regent), but somewhere (I've lost the reference) I seem to recall that this has been dna dispelled. Much more likely is the connection with his drinking buddy Lord Belvoir whose name is pronounced Bevir.
None of which is really relevant to your research I'm afraid - but, as I said, I do have the Vaisey record.
In case it is at all helpful I shall quote from it:-
Betty Bevir came to live in Cirencester..
She had two children Mildred Emma and George.
George Bevir was born in 1776 and was firstly married 22nd June 1795 to Esther Parker, who was born in 1777 and died 3rd August 1810.
By the first marriage they had 10 children, of whom John was born 12 May 1806 and died 15 Jan 1860.
George was secondly married to Susannah Lawrence who had two sons, William Lawrence and Edward James. Susan Lawrence was a Cirencester woman and was supposed to have ill-treated the first family.
John Bevir's first marriage is nebulous (sic) but he produced tow daughters Minnie and Annette.
John Bevir's second marriage was to Elizabeth Hill of Kings Stanley, Gloucester.
Good luck with your research

Hi Robin
The text comes from a family history produced by Sir Harry Bevir Vaisey (1877-1965) and was a reference to the diary of Edward Bevir (Betty's grandson). I don't believe either of them (the family history or the diary) are in the public domain.
As was common, first names were passed on down the generations - so I assume the George Bevir you refer to is the one born 1776(? - his birthday seems unknown - probably because of the mystery over Betty) and died 21 March 1846. He had a at least two grandsons called George.
Are you part of the Bevir direct line? The Vaisey record has several family trees.
Problem with this roots stuff is that the family spreads out so much every generation back one goes (on my father's side there is a family tree from mid 1850s with 150 first cousins!) - and gets complicated when cousins marry and/or second marriages appear.

Hi Charlotte CH and Carole W
As there seem to be two threads on Harry Bevir (as I found ifrom the search page) I have become a bit confused.
Anyhow I have unearthed a bit more stuff relating to Harry Bevir and you will find it on the other thread - I hope.

Diary of a Nobody is wonderful - Edward Bevir's diary is much more serious and very long.
But it does have some gems " 2 Aug 1860: My boy returned yesterday. He is 12th in the list. He will probably get into College within a year. This is the greatest prize an English boy (and therefore any boy) can win ..."
a few days later..
"Edward is to go up to Eton in september as an Oppidan until he goes into College. ... It is a heavy expense  ... It exposes the boy to many temptations and interruptions from those whose position is safe (presumably in College - I am afraid I do not know how Eton works) and far above his and who will doubtless try to laugh him out of any disposition he may evince fior work."

Edward seems to have had a rather chequered career lioke the Pooters' son.

Again:2 Sept 28 1846:- There is however one drawback to our domestic comfort - a proverbial one. Her mother, a person of imperious disposition, jealous and discontented, has exercised an absolute control over (my wife) as to almost deprived her of volition. The suspicious and tyrannising disposition of the mother have caused some painful disagreements. I will not quarrel with her but I cannot submit myself to female absurdities and caprice".

Changing the subject - I have to admit to a bit of confusion - there seem to be two threads running on Harry Bevir in roots chat - and I never know quite why it is that I sometimes get one and not the other. The other one seems to run to three pages and I have posted a couple of family trees on that.

Like all good families there should be a bit of scandal/gossip and if connected to royalty all the better!

Hi there
I am still new and a bit confused as there seem to be two threads on Harry Bevir
Anyhow I have now unearthed various things - mostly A) from a family history of the Vaizey family complied in 1947 and B) from Edward Bevir's diary.
Due to the limitation of size of the attachments  there will be a number of emails I am afraid.

First is left hand side of family tree
