Hi,

I'm afraid the book is no longer in my possession.  It was part of a collection belonging to a local astronomy society that I am a member of.  We had lost the space to keep our library so were selling off the collection.  I had hoped to find a relation of Ann Worthington to reunite the book with her family.  However, after some research, it appears that she had no descendants and no close relatives to contact about the book.  The book was auctioned off as part of a lot in 2011.

Thanks,
Clare

Hi Arthur

I will send you over a message with the transcription of the two births you have mentioned.

The list of spares was compiled from the births I had saved from the Scotlands People.  Since they are three to a page, there are usually two on the page that aren't relevant to my research (at least yet) but may be of use to others, so I'm not necessarily researching all the names in that list.

That said, I am researching Elliots.  My maternal grandmother was an Elliot and, thus far, I have managed to get back to ca.1810 with them in Castleton parish at which point an illegitimacy has slowed me down a little.  I have no links with the name Bell or Paterson at this point - but of course, that's not to say I won't at a later date!

Thanks,
Clare

Hi Clare
I'm not sure if you'll get this as I notice the original post is pretty old. Do you still have spare certificates handy? If so could you let me have the details of :- 1898      Sophia    Laidlaw   Murray      Father:   David Murray   Mother:   Mary turner   Hawick

Sophia Laidlaw Murray was my great aunt.

many thanks,
Elaine

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help on this one.

I do think that this was an illegitimate birth - I can find no record of a marriage or other children by these 2 parents.  So thanks for the help on translating what this record was telling me.

The record was indeed from Logie in Fife.  The birth in question was my 4th great grandmother.

Next time I am in Edinburgh, I'll try and look at the kirk session records (if available) to see if there is any other useful info.

Thanks again everyone,
Clare

Hi there,

I was looking at an OPR baptism today and noticed some wording that I didn't understand.  Can anyone help?

Wording as as follows
"Robert Watson Servt in Wester[...] had his child born and baptised & named Margaret (which he had by Charlotte Elder) upon his becoming a sponsor and making satisfaction here"

All help gratefully received - my cursory google search didn't yield anything that looked useful.

Cheers,
Clare

Hi there,

Thanks to everyone for the ongoing help on this.  Up until last summer, I lived very close to the actual location of both the Old Man's Asylum and George Street  (as Skoosh says, they are very close) - most of my family haven't really moved that much for the past 150 years  :) - so I am familiar with the housing of that time: even in the 1950s, my family were living in single-ends or 'room and kitchen' accommodation.  Having said that, I don't think he'd have simply moved out.

As I mentioned previously, I deliberately held back info on my family so as not to prejudice anyone (least of all myself) but suffice to say, I think it more likely he was thrown out.  When he died, he was listed as single (although still married) and his death was certified by an English niece (despite the fact that his family were only a couple of streets away).

In reply to Stewart - the family name was Chambers.  My GGG Grandfather was Daniel and he lived at George Street (certainly up to the 1891 census) with his wife Agnes and their children.  82 George Street would have been quite densely populated.  If you look at this image of the 1913-14 valuation roll for the property, you can see how many tenants (both domestic and commercial) at that time - http://www.theglasgowstory.com/imageview.php?inum=TGSV09039

Hi there,

I don't have an obituary but, when I was doing a lookup for a different rootschatter, I did find the transcription of his headstone in Castleton Churchyard.  Send me a PM if you like and I will send you the details.

For the obituary - I tried a search on the Scotsman archive but no luck.  Have you tried contacting the Borders FHS?

Thanks,
Clare
