Australia / Augustus Page
« on: Thursday 07 March 13 06:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping there are other people out there who may be able to help or know something about my 2nd Great-Grandfather Augustus Page.

Augustus was born in approx 1866. He arrived in Australia aboard the 'Austral' in 1885 at the age of 19.

On the 7th May 1890 he married Emily Tampe in Carlton, Victoria.

Augustus and Emily had 5 children that were all born in Malvern, Victoria before the family relocated to Sydney.
Elizabeth Ellen Page (1891-1977)
Henry Edward Page (1893 - 1893)
Hermann Page (1894 - 1894)
Emily Laura Page (1895 - 1971)
Francis August Page (1900 - 1947)

He worked as a carpenter and built the staircase at Iandra castle outside Greenthrope in New South Wales and it appears as though he may have spent some time in Western Australia (we have articles from Trove).

According to my Great-Aunt he left the martial home in Marrickville, NSW around 1915 but she does not know anything more about him.

Augustus died on the 3rd August 1926 in Sydney and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.

I have copies of her marriage certificate and death certificate which ends up throwing more questions than answers for us.

His marriage certificate states that he was born in Germany but the actual place is unclear. It looks like Colmar, Germany however his  death certificate states he was born in Cologne Germany.

The reasons for the questions are down to the family story.

Apparently Augustus use to say he didn't know if he was French or German because he was born in the Alsace-Lorraine region. In addition, his last name was actually LePage but it was changed somewhere along the way (this appears to have happened when he was still in Germany as all the records in Australia give his last name as Page)

If this is true, than Colmar could be his birth place because at the time of his birth it was part of Germany. (or we could be completely off track and the family story is wrong - which wouldn't surprise me)

However, having Cologne on his death certificate is understandable as the family spent some time there where Augustus use to sing in one of the Cathedrals.

We also have his parent's anglised names: Harry Page and Kate Alles.

If anyone knew about Augustus or can give some hints on how we can find out some more information about one of the more elusive members of the family it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Em.

Kerry / Re: Chute Family

Thanks Rathmore -  I am not sure. When I had a look at the marriage record on http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie it simply said his address was Ballymacelligott. There is no other indication of whether this was the parish or townland.

I will look further into the Griffiths Valuations. If the property is a farm it may be him as his occupation on one of his son's - Francis Chute, death certificate stated he was a farmer.

I am hoping when I can finally get a copy of James's death certificate I will have more details unfortunately the Victorian BDM Website search facilities have been out of action for a couple of days now.

Tinam - Francis Chute (B: 1836) is my 3rd Great Grandfather and I have seen a transcript of his death certificate which states his parents were James Chute & Honora Quill.

Thanks Castlemcauliffe - That definitely helps. I thought there may be different spelling of the name but unfortunately I was unsure of what it could have been as I have never heard the name Evis.

Kerry / Chute Family

I was wondering if anyone could help me with trying to track down some information about the Chute Family from Ballymacelligott in Ireland.

I know Chute was a common last name in County Kerry but I seem to be able find every other Chute recorded except for my relatives. :)

My 4th Great Grandfather was James Chute who was born in 1802 in Ireland, Ballymacelligott, and emigrated to Australia.

He married Honora/Hanora Quill/Quille on the 22 July 1821 in Tralee and they had five children that I know about.
James Chute 1828 - 1889
Maria Chute 1830 - 1913
Richard Chute 1832 - 1907
Francis Chute 1836 - 1905
George Chute 1840 - 1897

He arrived in Australia Jan 1862 on the Morning Light along with at least 3 of his children. I know his son, Francis Chute, did not emigrate to Australia until the 1880s.

I can not find any records of Honora emigrating with him so I have assumed she passed away prior to them leaving although I can not find any record of the her death.

James Chute (B:1802) passed away on the 24th May 1882 in Melbourne.

According to the information I have located I believe his parents are James Chute and Evis Mason but that is it.

I can not find any records of marriage, births or other children for James Chute Senior and Evis Mason. I have searched the http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ website as well as www.rootsireland.ie/ to no avail.

If anyone could shed further light on the family or could point me in a direction as to where I can find more information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Berwickshire / Re: William Young B:1845

Thanks again Monica,

The information you have provided has really helped.

Since I first posted I have been able to locate through SP the Last Will and Testament and Inventory of Estate of William Young Senior.

According to this he died at Eildon Cottage on the 13th Feb 1856. The will is dated 1850.

In the Will it names the trustees as Jess Linton or Young, his wife; Thomas Young tenant in Cowndenknows Mains; James Young, (William's nephew and Thomas' eldest son), a famer from Kiel near Newcastle in Country of Stafford; John Linton, tenant in Eastfield; and John Fairbain, tenant in Grizzlefield.

However in the inventory of the estate, dated March 1856, only Jessie Young, Thomas Young and James Young are named as the trustees so I am assuming that John Linton and John Fairbain passed away or moved away.

I am not sure if I have spelt some of the names right as the Will is hard to read in places.

After finding the Will I was able to find the Birth and Baptism records for William Young Senior and Thomas Young which states that their father is Robert Young.

I also have William Young Senior's death certificate which gives his mother as Agnes Young nee Potts. So this opens up a whole new arm of the family tree.

I am not sure sure where Jessie comes from either. That it something I would be interested in finding out. Using the dates I have I've now got a copy of Janet/Jessie's birth and baptism which names her as Janet and her mother as Susan and father John Linton.

However the 1861 census names her as Jessie Young and that is what she is referred to throughout William's Will and inventory.

With relation to Janet/Jessi's mother Susan. I have just located her the record of her death through SP with states she also died at Eildon Cottage in November 1862 in District of Melrose, County Roxburgh.

Ultimately I am hoping to learn more about the farms they owned/leased (the will references plural - farms so I am assuming there is more than one). This is something I know would interest my Dad since we're a farming family here in Australia. :)

Once again thank you for all your help :)

Thanks Monica :)

Thank you for those links. I have seen the first one but not the information about his brother. It gives me a place to start with trying to track down the imigration records for the family.  :)

At the moment all I have managed to piece together about William is approximate year of birth and year of marriage.

From what I have found I believe William Young and Alice Denham Myers had 8 children:
Jessie Patterson Young 1877
Denham Linton Young 1878-1917
John Naiper Young 1879-1951
William Young 1881 -
Robert Young 1882 -
Lionel Eildon Young 1884 -
Alice Young 1885 -
Alexander Young 1888-1970

As for the census records other than 1851. I have William's mother Janet Young, Grandmother - Susan Linton and sisters - Susan & Agnes listed on the 1861 Scottish Census. According to the census they are living in the Civil parish: Melrose, County: Roxburghshire, Address: Eildon.

None of the men are listed on this census so I am assuming William Young Senior passed away between 1851-1861 as the census lists Janet as the Head of the household. Although I'm yet to find any record of his death.

I found a possibility relating to my Great-Grandfather William Young in the 1861 Scottish census. There is a William Young listed as born in Berwickshire, Aged 16 and working as a Groom for the Renton Family (Elizabeth Renton). The address for the Renton's on the census is Above Coark House & Senbler Brith Rooms (this is from ancestry.com.au). This is something I need to look into further.

Berwickshire / William Young B:1845
« on: Monday 23 January 12 05:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if someone could please help me out.

I am looking into my family history and my search as lead me to my 2nd Great Grandfather William Young (Born in About 1845)

His marriage certificate lists Berwickshire as his place of birth.

William married Alice Denham Myers in 1876 in Victoria, Australia.

I believe his parents may be William Young who was born in Eckford, Roxburghshire, Scotland around 1786 and Janet Susan "Jessie" Linton born around 1804 in Coulter, Lanarkshire Scotland.

I have found them on the 1851 Scottish Census which lists them as living in Civil Parish of Mertoun, Town Bemersyde in the County Berwickshire

I am really hoping to find out more about the family or if there is someone who can point me in the right direction of finding out more information as I seem to be hitting a brickwall at the moment.

Thank you.
