Yeah, thanks Dave for all those links :-)

Browsing through those links I managed to come across the transcription of the scanned record I already had: of John Reid marrying Janet Cowie in 1834. Confimration of a sort.

Further searching for birth records of the two threw up several possibilites for both, which is also progress of a kind, though, at this stage, there is no way of telling which of the possibilites are correct.

Those records are sufficiently brief that I've mulled over piecing together every Reid and Cowie family in Rathven leading up to 1834, but I'm not yet convinced that doing so would get me anywhere - especially as it'd only work if one assumed that all members of both families were born and married within the one parish.

Does anyone know what the neighbouring parishes were / are?

Thanks again,

Duncan

Hi all,

Wow! So many responses so quickly! I'm impressed. Thanks for helping out :-)

I've seen some of these census records already - I've downloaded so much from the scotlandspeople website that I think I should buy shares in them to get my money back!

I've re-checked the records I have. I have the names John Reid and Janet Cowie from their children's marriage certificates. The 1841 census record I have also fits in with that picture, so I'm fairly confident of the names.

I don't have a confirmed 1851 census record and the only family member I can find in 1861 is Isabella, who had married the year before and was living with her husband.

I think that ev's theory of re-marriage could work - but I've not yet seen a death certificate / record for Janet Reid (nee Cowie). I suppose there are a couple more death records I could yet download from scotlandspeople to check, but that's an expensive way to rule things out. If John did marry Catherine then that census record would suggest that they'd not had any children in the 4 years since marriage and that the George and Isabella I have record of must have had several older siblings. Not impossible, but where were those older siblings in 1841...

Dave's alternate 1851 census theory could also work if one assumes that George had already left home by then. But the ages are all out...

I'll keep chasing this problem - and this discussion as certainly be helpful! Many thanks to all!

Regards,

Duncan

Hi Dave,

Due to the large number of Reids in the area at the time, I've only been able to find this family on the one census: 1841, in Nether Buckie, where Janet is listed as being 20 years old. It appears to be hard to trace anyone, in any part of the country in the 1851 census..

I've read elsewhere that in the early census data, ages could be to the nearest 5 years, which might explain the young reported age.

John and Janet had children George (c1838-1876) and Isabella (c1839-?). George's death certificate was signed by his father, meaning that John lived until at least 61 years old. Isabella married in 1860 and her mother was listed as deceased at that time.

Not much to go on I'm afraid :-(

Thanks AKC,

I've signed up there and have re-posted my question to that site with more detail. Lets see what happens!

Thanks,

Banffshire / John Reid & Janet Cowie

Hi all,

I've traced my family tree back to John Reid (c1816->at least c1876) and Janet Cowie (c1821 -> before 1860), who got married 08/11/1834 in Rathven.

Unfortunately, the marriage record is just a one line scribble in a parish record - listing the parents of neither :-( With so many John and Janet Reids in the area at the time, it is near impossible to say with any certainty which death records (which might list their parents) pertain to these two and not to others. I am therefore stuck in my attempts to trace back any further.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Duncan

Orkney / Reid / Swanny - on Stronsay / Stromness
« on: Friday 27 April 12 00:31 BST (UK)  »

Hi all,

This is my first post to this site, so please forgive any mistakes!

I'm looking for any living descendants of John Reid (1865-1929) and Mary Swanny (1872-1941). The family were on Stronsay for the 1911 census. I've got the names of some of their children: Betsy, Mary, Christina, Tonie, James, George, Agnes, John and Peter and in some cases know the names of people they married and names of some children.

What I'm missing is contact with any living descendants.

I'm especially interested to find out what became of their son, John William Reid, 1912-? as he was last seen c1956...

Any help will be much appreciated...

Thanks,

Duncan
