Yes,

I've files set up for 'coincidences' as you never know when they may be needed at a later date ?

What did Mary Henry Ryan die of (not in childbirth by any chance) - OR just wondering 'playing Devil's Advocate' would it have been possible for Margaret to have been born between the census in April and Mary's passing in August.

If I was you I would have a quick look for a Margaret Conway in New York 1910 census- one stating 'born in Massachusettes' with husband James. Conway is a common name though, so may be tricky. If nothing turns up, I'd leave it there.

Best of Luck

Tara

Mary Henry died of consumption, so I'm not sure that she would have survived a birth that occurred during that stage of the disease.  And in 1876, the child would probably have not survived, as it would surely have been born with the disease.  Although stranger things have happened.....

I didn't have any luck in the 1910 census, either.....none of the Margaret Conway's fit the parameters---the ages were way off and the husband's names were not right.  But that was a great idea, and I've appreciated your help in this.  Thank you so much.

I checked the census records that I have for Patrick Ryan in Boston for 1880 and there is no child Margaret listed with them.  Mary Henry died in August of 1880, just a couple of months after they'd taken the census, so there's not much chance of a child being born after that.

But since census takers aren't infallible, I went through the birth registers of Boston/surrounding area to see if a Margaret had been born to Patrick and Mary.  I couldn't find one.

There is no 1890 census that survives for Massachusetts.  Patrick Ryan died in 1890.  The 1900 census search for any of Patrick and Mary's children that a Margaret could have been living with comes up empty as well.

Which brings me to the conclusion--for now anyway-- that it must have been a coincidence.... :(    But I'm certainly going to keep an open mind, because you never know.

And thank you, thank you, for your help!

P.S.  Yes, I did have the other information in the links you sent me already.  But I do appreciate your taking the time to do that, because one never knows!

Does this look like a daughter Margaret born to this couple or just a coincidence ??

Patrick Conway
Margaret Ryan
marriage 26 Sep 1906
place Manhattan, New York, New York
Patrick's father James Conway
Patrick's mother Howia Richards
bride's father Patrick Ryan
bride's mother Mary Henry

Tara

It certainly looks like it.  There was a 2 year gap between the birth of last two children of Patrick and Mary,  and if this Margaret was about 20 years old when the marriage took place, she would fit right into that gap.  She would have been the only one in the family that left the Boston area, but that's certainly a possibility.  I know that Patrick Ryan and Mary Henry are common names, but I'm willing to turn over every stone.

Can you tell me where you found this?  Thank you so much for sharing it with me!

I have a copy of "Records of Fort. St. Frédéric 1732-1759" if anyone needs a birth, death, or marriage lookup.  There are even some land sales recorded.

Fort St. Frédéric was a French fort technically located in New York.  They kept their own records, and these records are generally not included in most online record collections like Drouin or Tanguay.  I happened to run across the publication for sale through a genealogical society and, as I had a family whose information was contained in those records, I bought it.   I'm happy to help others who may have had difficulty finding this information.

Hello and welcome to rootschat  :)

I have looked up the place names you mention and I am wondering if 'Barse' is Barroe and Touroe is Tonroe or even Barroe.

You have the residence of the father listed as both places- Barse and Touroe.

Griffiths Valuation has a Thomas Ryan in Barroe in the parish of Kilbeagh

That may be a starting point for the marriage, however according to this information, the period before 1870 is not available in Kilbeagh parish.

If you think that Barroe is the area, there is a Ryan (1901) Ryans (1911) family in the census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

regards
heywood

Thank you, heywood, both for the welcome and the quick response.
  :)

"Barse" could very well be "Barroe".  I am looking at an actual copy of the record, and the handwriting is heavy and dark; the "o" is filled in and looks like an "s", so it could very well be Barroe; although they only spelled it with one "r".

I noticed that they gave two listings for the father's residence, which baffled me a bit.; but not being familiar with Irish place names, I wasn't sure what I was dealing with.  The family in the register above the Ryans' was from Tonroe, so maybe it was simply an error on the part of the registrar.

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction and giving me a place to start!

Mayo / Patrick RYAN/RYANS-Mary HENRY, Lowpark, Co. Mayo

My great-great grandfather was Patrick RYAN or RYANS.  He was born about 1835 in Ireland.  His father was Thomas RYAN; his mother's first name was Ellen.

Patrick married Mary HENRY; the date/place of this event is unknown.  Mary was born in Ireland about 1839.  Her father was Patrick HENRY; her mother's first name was Bridget.

The birth record for Patrick and Mary's son Patrick has the following information:
Page 9
Superintendent Registrar's District:  Swineford
Registrar's District:  Lowpark
1870 Births Registered in the District of Lowpark  in the Union of Swineford
County of Mayo
#395
Place & Time of Birth:  Fifth March 1870 Barse
Name:  Patrick
Sex:  Male
Name & Surname & Dwelling Place of Father:  Patrick Ryans, Barse
Name & Surname & Maiden Name of Mother:  Mary Ryan, formerly Henry
Rank or Profession of Father:  Landholder
Signature, Qualification & Residence of Informant:  Mark of Patrick Ryans, Father, Touroe

The above information came from FHL Film 101203.  I was unable to find a marriage for Patrick Ryan/Ryans or Mary Henry, or any other children born to them.

Patrick & Mary's next known child was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1872, so the family immigrated to America between March 1870 and March 1872.  The names of the rest of the known children, all born in Boston, are:

Bridget-Born March 1872
Thomas F- Born 10 March 1873
Ellen-Born March 1875
John J.- Born 28 November 1877

I have all of their birth and death records, and the last name in all of them is spelled "Ryan", with no "s".

Due to not knowing when Patrick Sr. and Mary were married, I do not know if Patrick is their first child.  They seem to have roughly followed the Irish naming pattern for naming the children and all of the names seem to have been represented expect for "John"; don't know where that one comes from.  The name of the father or mother's eldest brother would have been the next namesake in line.

I am hoping that this information may resonate with someone who might have similar folks in their family tree and can toss me a crumb of information or two.  Or even some suggestions on where to look next.  I'm in America and seem to have come to a dead end on this side of the pond.  Any help in any way, shape, or form, is welcome and appreciated.  Thank you!

The Lighter Side / Re: Screen Names

My first name is actually Jolynn; the 2 is because someone else appeared to have the name as well.  I use my first name because, after years of hating it, I have decided that it's a nice name.

Also because I have no imagination and can't think of anything cute or catchy..... ::)
