CaileanMac,
Many thanks for that link, a lot of reading to do over the holidays.
I notice you are looking for MacDonald, by any chance do you have a connection to a Donald McLeman MacDonald 1896-1964 from Rosshire as well as a Isobella McPherson from Laggan born c 1775 had a child out of wedlock to Donald Fraser that child born 1810 named Alexander Fraser.
Thanks

Not sure if this will get through, but have read your post relating to the 26th foot.
My gg grandfather joined the 26th in 1839 and retired in 1860 as a sergent. His name was John Caldwell. i have his service record but I am chasing some photos of the uniforms of the time from private to sergent. Are you able to help or point in the right direction. Do you have a better breakdown of his possible areas of service as his service record is very vaig. I can forward what i have been able to determine but just need to clarify.

England / the ship st. george
« on: Wednesday 17 August 16 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help me locate some history on the ship St.George which was built in 1836 in New Brunswick Canada by Robert Ellis. This ship was used as an immigrant ship in 1838 from Scotland to Australia. Llyods register has it registered till 1844. i am trying to find what happened to it, did it sink, change names or continued in service. There is a ship of the same name on the immigrant run to America 1846-1849 but no detail of the ship I can see at this moment.

Can anybody advise/direct me to where I can find a list of British WW1 servicemen who received the DFC. I am looking for Alfred Stephen(belived to be Wing Commander) who I have been advised of from a distance cousin received the DFC for WW1. If this is the case, how do I get his service record.

Thanks for the reply, sorry I have not replied earlier.

I live in Australia.

Josey,
Unfortunally I cannot find any records for William & Jane after the 1861 census & Jane birth in 1863. The 1871 census only lists the mother Mary and daughter Mary Elizabeth living with her parents in Wigan Wales(John died January 1871 just prior to the census & is buried in the Holy Trinty Church Pontnewydd Cemetery which I think is Anglican) . Mary Elizabeth the daughter migrated to Australia in 1892 and she married in 1893 according to the rites of the Church of England.

Jebber, can you relook at the regimental birth index for William, as i have found in my collection a copy of a page from the index for Caldwells and one for a William J Caldwell born Valmer year 18?7 cant make the year out, regiment 26th, volume and page I cant read. Would this mean his father was in the 26th and born Valmer which i think is in France(didnt know the regiment was even there). Do these records hold much info(maybe parents name). Thanks
