Sharon, did you get that list from Ancestry.com or Ellis Island or where?  The reason I asked is a couple years ago I went through those sites as well. Since there seem to be some young children without any other parents arriving on the same day with them I'm wondering if some are listed as from Sparta, Greece (Arna is basically part of Sparta).

Also, although "Liounis" was the original English translation before some further Americanized it into "Lewnes", it may also be worth searching that as well.  I think I may have already in 2010 (I'll have to go dig up my notes).  Basically, to be thorough it's probably wise to search both of those two surnames arriving from any town of residence in Greece between 1890-1940 I would think.

Hi, I found this discussion thread and website on Google.  Efstratios Lewnes/Liounis who came over in 1911 is my grandfather!  I have an old rubber stamp from their ice cream and confectionary store in Brooklyn from the 1920's or 1930's.  I have been trying to find out all the brothers and sisters (at least the ones who emigrated to the U.S.) of that generation so I can pinpoint all my second cousins and such that I am finding on Facebook with both the surnames "Liounis" and "Lewnes".  If the post above mine is any indication, there seems to be a lot in that family who came iover in the early 20th Century (unless some of the females are wives).  Some moved to Maryland from Brooklyn where a branch of the Lewnes family lives (they own the famous Lewnes Steakhouse in Annapolis) near where I too was born and originally lived.  I too face difficulty because of the English translation and spelling of surname, Anglicized version of Greek first names, and the fact that so many in the same family recycle the same first names by tradition.  Can you help?  :D

Below is a photo of Efstratios Lewnes who came over in 1911 and died in the 1940's and his son Vasillios (William) who is my dad who died in 2003.  I don't know what Efstratios would be in English (Stratis? Stephen?)
