Armed Forces / Re: British Regiments Stationed in Ireland 70th Foot
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 07:13 BST (UK)  »
I discovered more about Robert Chalmers from Girvan yesterday, including the fact that he went thru his entire army service with his surname spelt incorrectly as Robert  "Chambers" , his regimental number was 136 and he enlisted and joined the main battalion in Perth 21 June 1814. later that year he was sent to Kingston in Canada until December 1814. he was demoted from Corporal to Private in 1816 and there appears to be a gap in his service until 1826 when he was on detachment in Montreal Canada (Captain Kelsalls Company). This gap coincides with the birth of his 2 daughters IN 1818 AND 1821.
- He then ends up in Ireland 1828-1830 in Dublin.
-1833-1834 Kilmaganny, Kilkenny and Cork in March 1834.
-He was lastly posted to the depot (?) from April until 6th September 1835, he didnt take a long service pension however took a small lump sum.
Sadly this is why his wife Sarah may have ended up in Barnhill Poorhouse, Glasgow, where she died, unable to work after a stroke and with no money to support her.
- One year after being discharged from service Robert died , in 1836, leaving 5 children apparently destitute.
The reason I have followed this 3 x G Grandfather is to find these children which I now have, after they worked from age 7 in a workhouse in Glasgow. Life was pretty heartbreaking back then. The information I gathered yesterday was compiled by a private family historian employed by a relative of mine here in Australia. So very keen to piece together this branch of my family history, any info most appreciated.

I am after information on the 70th regiment of Foot, my ancestor Robert Chalmers b 1790 Girvan Ayrshire, joined the army in December 1813. the story goes that he was a soldier until a year or so before his death in 1836 in Glasgow. We understand one child at least was born in Ireland, possibly two, Samuel b 1827/1828 . Roberts wife was Sarah (Jelly from Ayrshire) and we wondered would a wife have accompanied Robert in his postings in Ireland etc? He seems to have been able to father 5 children during his service! Any further information on this regiment appreciated to try and unravel this mystery

I am researching my Chalmers family beginning , I believe, in Girvan in Ayrshire, Scotland. David Chalmers b 1704 married Sara Broun b. 1700 in abt 1720. One child, my ancestor was Ronald Chalmers b 1726 and d 1790. He married Margaret McClymont, their child was John who married Agnes Guthrie. I understand the family originated in Girvan however  I dont have an address. the children of John and Agnes were all born in/registered Girvan. I would love to find out what they did and where they lived

Looking for any information on my 2 x g grandfather from Ireland who moved to Derbyshire .John Murphy b 24 May 1819 in Dublin, Ireland, was apprenticed to Mr John Vallance of Derbyshire, at the suggestion of Dowager Marchioness of Ormonde, a family friend and a woman whose patronage caused John to move to England to learn his trade. I have found Johns' obituary listing his father as a soldier and detailing young Johns' apprenticeship to the trade, where he became a marble mason with his own business in Madron / Penzance, Cornwall, after being the foreman of the Penzance Serpentine Co. in 1850s. He then had his own business and lived in Market Jew St, Penzance. I am interested in his life in Cornwall, he married Elizabeth Bryan, daughter of Benjamin Bryan and Mary Bown, (the family had some of the  show caverns, Coalpit Rake/Devonshire Cavern,)  in Matlock Bath in 1841 in Matlock Bath and had 11 children. They moved to Penzance in 1850,  I am also keen to know more about his family, he had 7 brothers and one sister who eventually came to England also, from Ireland. John was also an inventor who mastered a method to arrest the decay of stone, he and one other rival were selected eventually to conduct further trials about this process, but John died before he found out the results of his discovery. Any information on this family would be most appreciated.

Australia / Re: James Andrew b1902 Glasgow d 1976 Waverley NSW

Thank you for your helpful replies, I will look into it. What I am really hoping for is to find a living member of the family who has a photo of my Grandmother Sarah. Her correct name was Sarah McIntosh Chalmers, she had my mother when she was young and single and was encouraged to give her up, then Sarah was taken back to Scotland to live. She later came out again, as her siblings were here in Australia, and married James Andrew in 1936. No mention was made of her child, but at Sarah's funeral in 1973, my mother attended and found a wonderful Scottish family who welcomed her. However we never seemed to find a photo of either Sarah or James
Just ordered death and marriage certificates for James Andrew

I am searching for information about James Andrew, he married my Grandmother Sarah McIntosh on 31 October 1936 at 5 Scott St, Waverley NSW. They both came from Glasgow originally. I know nothing of this side of the family as he married my Grandmother after she had my mother in 1921 . I believe they may have known each other in Scotland as they apparently lived only a few streets apart in Glasgow as children. Any information or contacts would be most appreciated, I am hoping to find a photo of Sarah McIntosh and of James as well. James was buried in the Waverley, NSW  cemetary. He was a green grocer, and later a hospital attendant .
