Completed Census Requests / Re:1871 Census New Wortley or Wortley, Leeds STOCKWELL
« on: Wednesday 14 April 04 16:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello Linda:
Thank you very much. That was very kind of you to do.

I'm about 98% sure this is my Joseph Stockwell (my GGF).

I must say that in England people certainly did get around. Here in Canada most immigrants stayed put for generations and only recently have they started moving about.

Have also recently discovered rellies in your part of the world. HALLS and CAMERONS in AU and  NZ. Always fascinating to know that one's DNA is half way around the world.

Should you require any CANADIAN searches I live near the Ontario Archives. Many Yorkshire men and women came to Ontario during the 1800's to 1940's.

With thanks for the information
Alec in Toronto

Hello Linda:
Discrepancy about his age either born in 1812 or 1819 making him either 58 or 52 (or thereabouts) he may have been or was a widower.
Does this help?

The Common Room / Re:Did they lie about their age
« on: Tuesday 13 April 04 12:49 BST (UK)  »
Ages can never be trusted on documents. Some simply didnt know the years in which they were born; others seem to have given it from the date of their christening (in some cases years after they were born) others simply fudged. I had an aunt who knocked off a few years when she married her husband. Consequently all her siblings (in order to maintain the ruse, knocked two years off their ages. ) My uncle never knew until she died.
