I recently received from the Lothian Health Services documents regarding my x great grandfather, Colin McNaughton. He was admitted to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in 1849 for Tuberculosis, from which he subsequently died. One of the documents states that he was aged 30, and that his " native place " was Glasgow. The LHS archivist confirmed that "native place" did indeed, mean birthplace.
I have searched the OPR's on ScotlandsPeople for birth/baptismal details, but could find nothing. The same for Familysearch. I included all of Scotland in my searches, and the various spellings of McNaughton. I know that he was born about 1819/21 because this is re-confirmed on the 1841 Census of St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, where his age is shown as 20 years.
I did find a birth record for a Colin McNaughton born Glasgow on 30 Sep 1796, parents John McNaughton & Agnes Tassie. I thought he would make a good candidate for father of "my" Colin McNaughton, but can't find a marriage ( or death ) for him. I should mention here that the names, John, Colin and Agnes have been used in just about every generation of this family - not that it necessarily means anything beyond "straw grasping".
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards, Bernard
