Lanarkshire / Re: Looking for Colin McNaughton birth in Glasgow about 1819/1821
« on: Thursday 19 February 15 14:55 GMT (UK)  »
Colin McNaughton married Elizabeth Duffie/Duffy at St. Cuthbert's Parish Church, Edinburgh on 09 Apr 1840. She was born in Ireland about 1822.

Her parents are Hugh Duffie and Sarah O'Donnell, both born in Ireland. No paternal information was recorded on the marriage entry.

Lanarkshire / Looking for Colin McNaughton birth in Glasgow about 1819/1821
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 20:07 GMT (UK)  »
I recently received from the Lothian Health Services documents regarding my x great grandfather, Colin McNaughton. He was admitted to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh in 1849 for Tuberculosis, from which he subsequently died. One of the documents states that he was aged 30, and that his " native place " was Glasgow. The LHS archivist confirmed that "native place" did indeed, mean birthplace.

I have searched the OPR's on ScotlandsPeople for birth/baptismal details, but could find nothing. The same for Familysearch. I included all of Scotland in my searches, and the various spellings of McNaughton. I know that he was born about 1819/21 because this is re-confirmed on the 1841 Census of St. Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, where his age is shown as 20 years.

I did find a birth record for a Colin McNaughton born Glasgow on 30 Sep 1796, parents John McNaughton & Agnes Tassie. I thought he would make a good candidate for father of  "my" Colin McNaughton, but can't find a marriage ( or death ) for him. I should mention here that the names, John, Colin and Agnes have been used in just about every generation of this family - not that it necessarily means anything beyond "straw grasping".

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards, Bernard

Hi Hawthorne:

I tried to email the original poster and it bounced.
If you google the DUFFY name Rootsweb mailing list you will probably find the posting from last May, and/or subscribe to the mailing list and post your information.

Good Luck,

Bernard

Hi  Cath & Hawthorne:

My original posting regarding Mary Elizabeth DUFFY was done to help someone on the DUFFY name Rootsweb mailing list. I had posted a couple of responses back to the sender and also sent the question on to the Rootschat list, which you just found. Since I didn't discover any new information that would help the original poster I ended my short search.

The poster did advise me that she and her sister had created an Ancestral File on Familysearch based on information that had turned out to be erroneous, or something like that. If Hawthorne and the DUFFY poster are not one and the same person I'd be happy to give you the e-mail address.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: 1841/1851 Census Lookup Please - LONGHURST
« on: Friday 13 January 12 20:16 GMT (UK)  »

Hi AnnaS:

Yes, it looks like this is a different couple.

I do have a definite match on a Thomas LONGHURST ( or LANGHURST ) who married a Phillis DUNCKLEY from Silverstone/Whittlebury, Northants. They married in Whittlebury in 1818 and then took off for the bright lights of Ockley. One of the witnesses at their marriage was a James LANGHURST. The 1851/61 indicates her Northants roots and shows Thomas born in Ockley.

I thought John might have been a "missing" third brother who decided to pitch his tent in Northants for a while, take a bride, and then move back to Surrey as well. Perhaps not.

Thanks for checking those censuses for me.

Regards, Bernard

Hello RootsChatters:

I have a marriage between John LANGHURST and Ann LIDDINGTON on 12 Oct 1817 in Horton, Northants.

I have reason to believe that John LANGHURST might be a native of one of the Weald villages of Surrey, possibly Ockley, Abinger, Ewhurst or Wotton, where his last name would have most likely been spelled " LONGHURST ". Ann LIDDINGTON may have been born in Syresham, Northants about 1789.

Could SKS please see if this couple appears in either (or both) the 1841 and 1851, in one of those Surrey locations.

Many thanks in advance,

Bernard
