Scotland / Re: DESPERATELY seeking Earl/Langwell Sutherland connection IN TIME!
« on: Saturday 08 September 12 13:45 BST (UK)  »
Do apologise MonicaL for messing up by putting my search in 3 forums; I didn't know you shouldn't do that, and hope my reply to all of you gets in here. I have finally been able to read that Donald Sutherland b 4.9.1720 record, and see his Father was William Sutherland of Houstry. On Scotlandspeople, there was a likely marriage for a William Sutherland for 3.9.1717 at Watten Parish (no P Latheron then), for 3.9.1717 to Elspet Cormach. It also  looks possible that this William was the one born 16.9.1701 in Watten Parish, the son of a John Sutherland of Clyth - what do people think? Don't suppose I can prove these, the few facts given in those days just seem to 'tally in'

Thanks Skoosh and Mike in Cumbria. Yes, my definite, proven by certs etc link is to Donald Sutherland (b 4.9.1720), the tacksman of Blackness, Mid Clyth, Caithness. A tree confirming all my findings was ALREADY compiled for my ancestors at the Dunbeath Heritage Centre when we visited a few weeks ago, the majority of which had been done a long time ago by another distant relative, the Reverend George Sutherland from Bruan, and added to/confirmed by other distant relatives who had visited there. However, in the notes on this tree at the top next to this Donald, the tacksman, it says that he was descended from Donald Na Pallaig, Head of Langwell family Sutherland, and therefore back to the 3rd Earl's son, and 4th Earl of Sutherland's brother, Nicholas. That is, I am afraid, the ONLY reason I have to think this so far. I am awaiting a reply from email and letter sent to the Dunbeath Heritage Centre  on whether they have any more of the Reverend's notes, and have tried phoning them to no avail so far. I thought someone somewhere may have already done the Langwell Na Pallaig-Earls tree, or know how I could get it.

Scotland / DESPERATELY seeking Earl/Langwell Sutherland connection IN TIME!
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 11:30 BST (UK)  »
Just got to prove the link between our ancestor Donald Sutherland, Tacksman of Darkness, Mid Clyth, Caithness(b 4.9.1720) and Donald Na Pallaig, Head of the Langwell Sutherlands of Berriedale, Caithness in time for Golden Wedding Present (END SEPT) for Great Aunt who's always wanted to know. Have not been able to read his parentage from baptismal entry on 'Scotlandspeople', so feel utterly unable to proceed; neither Dunrobin Castle nor Langwell House have been able to assist. Also need to prove the link back from Donald Na Pallaig/Langwell Sutherlands, back to Nicholas Sutherland (son of Kenneth, the 3rd Earl, and brother to the 4th Earl), who died in 1320.  PLEASE can anyone help with any of this?- really don't want to let her down now!!!

Caithness / DESPERATELY seeking Langwell/Earl Sutherland link in time!
« on: Thursday 06 September 12 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Hope this beginner in right place now! Need to find links between our ancestor Donald Sutherland, Tacksman of Darkness, Mid Clyth (b 4.9.1720) and Donald Na Pallaig, Head of the Langwell Sutherlands, in time to show my Great Aunt for her Golden Wedding present at the END SEPTEMBER - she has always wanted to have her Caithness family tree for definite, and a Caithness Reverend earlier in the family made the claim. I can't read the parentage of the above Donald Sutherland from 'Scotlandspeople', and neither Dunrobin nor Langwell House have been able to help. Really don't want to let my aunt down - PLEASE help, someone, as feel helpless!

Derry (Londonderry) / clara letitia baldridge and a caithness soldier?
« on: Saturday 25 August 12 22:23 BST (UK)  »
My grt grt grandad james sutherland b 20.10.1842was from caithness, scotland, but ended up marrying clara letitia baldridge b approx 1842 derry. family folklore says he met her whilst serving in the army in ireland, but they married in 1868 in manchester, england, and he was a journeyman tailor then. cd find neither of them in england in 1861 census, but think he MAYhave been the lodging apprentice tailor b latheron elsewhere in caithness away from his family still in latheron, where they all remained. Does anyone know whether a caithness boy could have ended up soldiering in derry, OR whether clara l baldridge came to manchester england for another reason previously, or ANYTHING which may solve this puzzle?

Caithness / Re: William Sutherland
« on: Saturday 25 August 12 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Thanks VERY MUCH everyone, particularly Monica L for finding the newspaper obit.  - hopefully now I can find the death on SP, and perhaps his first wife through that. Thanks also very much to FIRTHVIEW, my friend, for putting this into the Caithness section; I'm very 'green' to rootschat, and don't really know what I'm doing eg someone pointed out elsewhere in rootschat that the 1911 census said he was a United Reform minister, when I thought it had said free church - I'm clearly hopeless at deciphering the old writing too!!
Anyway, thanks very much to all you genealogical supersleuths out there, I really appreciate the help

Family History Beginners Board / Re: caithness soldier in derry, northernireland?
« on: Friday 24 August 12 20:21 BST (UK)  »
thanks for that Jim1. couldn't find him previously in england in the 1861 census, but there was an apprentice tailor lodging with that name and age in 1861 scottish census elsewhere in caithness from his family in dunbeath/latheron. His dad was william sutherland(b 1797 golsary, latheron, and his mum janet nee cumming b 1807 dunbeath, caithness. Most o f his family staid in caithness, but some emmigrated later on to canada and australia. His own english sons went into the army for periods out of war time (eg into the hussars in 1886, so thought that may support the army theory, though also along lines you suggest, know his wife's sister was over from derry as a domestic in manchester in 1871 census.

Thanks for the replies diddy and manchester rambler - I meant the free church of scotland by fcs, sorry. Thanks also to ruskie; I forgot to mention he'd been living with a servant only in glasgow in 1911, and I couldn't find him at all in the 1901 scottish census, yet he was definitely described as a widower in his 1916 marriage certificate - any ideas in how to proceed anyone? Also the dunbeath heritage centre, Caithness had a family tree for us, added to by visitors as they come(as they do for many local families), and that said the marriage to euphemia mcghie was a 2nd one

my ancestor james sutherland b 20.10.1842 was a journeyman tailor. though evidence still in caithness in his late teens, he left his family and settled in manchester, england in 1868, marrying clara letitia baldridge from derry, northern ireland. Acc to distant family folklore, he met her in n ireland whilst serving with ARMY there. don't know which regiment - is that possible/does anyone know how/why a latheron boy tailor could have done this? don't know how/where/when he trained as tailor . thnks
