Trying to find why/when Godfrey Hall, born 1909 Chorlton, Manchester died 1970 West Heath, Birmingham would have changed his name from Hall to Lawton. On his will it states "Godfrey Hall otherwise Godfrey Lawton" His parents were Elizabeth Ann Hall (nee Pownall) and George Hall.

Can anyone shed any light on where I can obtain information about Lakeside Ladies Hostel, Ashton under Lyne? I have tried via Tameside record office but they have no idea what I'm on about! My great aunt's will lists her address as Lakeside Ladies Hostel. Any help/advice you can offer will as usual be much appreciated.

Somerset / Re: Orchard Family, Somerset, England

I'm descended from the New Brunswick, Canada Orchard family. I'm trying to trace BACK. Also does anyone know WHO came with Robert Orchard to Canada, how and when did they get there ?  I'm descended from  Robert's son John and  Mary Caroline Bennison.   Their daughter Iva Myrtle Orchard was my Great Grandmother.  She married Orland Stanley Dykeman.  Photo is of my GGM and my GM.

Robert Orchard was my 4 x Great Uncle and I too am trying to trace back from him.  I know he arrived in Canada in 1829 but how he got there and who with I am still working on.  I have my dates for him and his family from when they arrived in Canada from an excerpt of E. Stone Wiggins book "History of Queens County" If I find anything I will let you know.

Yes, it would have been nice to give an actual age for them it might have made my search a bit easier the census records list them from being born 1795 to 1805!

The Common Room / William Wright Hannah Swain(e) - Cheshire

Trying to find any information I can about my 3 x Great Grandparents - William Wright and Hannah Swain.  They were married at St Lawrence Church, Biddulph, Staffordshire in 1827.  According to 1841 and subsequent census records, William was born in Wildboarclough, Cheshire and Hannah in Gawsworth, Cheshire.  I am now trying to find out who their parents were with great difficulty! When Hannah married William, she already had an illegitimate child Thomas Swain (his surname appears as Wright on the census) born in 1823 in Gawsworth.  I can only assume that Hannah and William were both working in the Biddulph area hence them marrying there.  On 1841 census William's date of birth is 1801 and Hannah's 1796, on 1851 - the same, 1861 - 1801 and 1793. 1871 - 1801 and Hannah deceased 1864. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Susannah Pownall born 1823
« on: Thursday 13 October 16 13:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello again,

I am after the help of you lovely people again.  My 3 x great aunt Susannah (sometimes without the "h" and sometimes just Susan....) was born in 1823 in Macclesfield to John Pownall and Jane Massey.  On 1851 census she is listed as having two sons - John Worsley born 1844/5 and Thomas born 1845/6.  I have found birth and baptism records for John Worsley but not for Thomas,  I have found a baptism record for Jan 1845/6 for a Timothy Worsley Pownall with mother Susannah but no mention of him after this.  It appears from census and other records that Susannah had three children out of wedlock?? Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Surname changed from Tittensor to Tideswell
« on: Monday 10 October 16 15:24 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help me.  About ten years ago there was a very informative page explaining why some of the Tittensor family changed their name to Tideswell.  If anyone can tell me if this page still exists and where I can find it I would be grateful.
