...Thomas Hannam Esq.
   who departed this life
(Looks like October 16 so looked him up.)
    October 16th. 1841
       aged 75 years

But the grave is talking about Sarah's date of death, not her husband's (?)

After playing with the colour a bit on a PC program, I read it as this, although if I can decipher any more I'll get back to you. Hope the date of death I got from it is accurate.  :-\

SARAH
The beloved wife of
Thomas Hannam Esq
of Middlesex Place
. . .
Who departed this life
JULY 14 1840
Aged ___ YEARS.
.
.
.
.
.
.
ALSO SUSAN JAMES
.
.

Can anyone improve the quality of this photo please I think it reads

Sarah
The beloved wife of
Thomas Hannam Esq
of Middlesex Place   ( where he lived)
Who departed this life

That is as far as I could get there should also be the mention of a Mary E Edmonds and a Susan James in that order.

Thanks        Steve

Hi Bearkat,

That's really interesting about the middle names and might possibly explain why his middle name is really unusual since it doesn't occur anyway else in the immediate family.

Now to hunt for Eggletons in Stockbury!

Thanks!

Alan.

George Eggleton CHEEL son of Elizabeth baptised  18 Sept 1808 at Stockbury (from a transcription).

No father mentioned so I would think he was illegitimate.  Illigitimate children were often given their father's surname as a middle name.  It might be worth looking for a bastardy order.

Ah, thanks for that! I didn't even think to check Cheel marriages!  ::)

If anything I imagine that it is William & Elizabeth who are the parents, although yeah, if that's the case, who is the William d. 1804? William & Elizabeth seem to have had: Ann (1798, Hucking nr Stockbury), Mary (1800, Hucking nr Stockbury), Hannah (1805, Stockbury), and then there's poor ol' George whose mother is Elizabeth, but no recorded father.

Unless the record on FamilySearch just doesn't have the father's name, and it was missed off. *shrugs*

Thanks again,

Alan.

There don't seem to be many instances of the name Cheel in Stockbury on familysearch

Sarah Cheal married Richard Gadd 16 September 1799

William Cheel married Elizabeth Boseley 5 June 1797

William & Elizabeth christen a Hannah 27 January 1805

but William could already have died ... burial of a William 17 November 1804

If George is a son of Elizabeth with no mention of a father Elizabeth could well be the widow of William but that does not solve the mystery as to who Georges father is. :-\

You really need to see if there is any additional information on the registers

What does the christening say, does it indicate that Elizabeth is a single woman.  ???

Rosie

Hi Rosie,

I've only been able to look at his baptism on FamilySearch, so I don't know what it says about the marital status of Elizabeth!  ??? I can't find the record on Ancestry.

Alan.

Hello all,

I'm looking for a George Cheel, middle name possibly Eggleton/Eppleton, who was baptised in Stockbury in 1808. I've already found his mother's name is Elizabeth, but I can't seem to find his father.

Any help greatly appreciated :)

Regards,

Alan.

Kent Lookup Requests / John Hooker (1723) - Sheerness, Minster.

Hey there,

I'm looking for a John Hooker, born 1723 in Kent (Sheerness/Minster area); he's my 6th-g-grandfather. I want to find out his parents' names. I've tried a search on Ancestry, but to no avail.

There is a record of his baptism on FindMyPast, but I don't know if that will show his parents' names, so am hesitant to buy some credits, especially since I have an Ancestry subscription. His wife's name was Mary, and his son John Hooker (b. 1755, Minster) had a wife called Elizabeth Freshwater.

I don't know whether people know if his parents' names would show on the FindMyPast link, so if anyone has any information on that, and it's positive, I might buy some credits.

Thanks!

Alan.

Hi Grandarog,

Thanks for the information - and thanks for that list of names - I recognise a lot of them from the family tree, but some of them I don't, so I'll see if they link into the tree somewhere (I'm sure they do - Sheppey is only a small island, after all).

Thanks again,

Alan  ;D
